Luck In Hunter X Hunter: Kite's Crazy Slots & Risky Dice
A Bad Roll, Huh.

Today I want to talk about Luck in Hunter x Hunter, and when I say luck I don’t mean ‘it sure was lucky that phinks and feitan didn’t decide to blow off gon and killuas heads during their unexpected run-in at the end of the york new city arc’.

And I’m not talking about the OST track ‘try your luck’ best known for being the official anthem of orgasms at least for Hisoka when he was fighting Gon in heaven’s arena - Schwing.

No instead I’m talking about two of Hunter x Hunters most luck based RNG mechanics and how they tie into the incredibly unexpected twist that was Kite being reborn as a Chimera Ant. Or at least, one of the unconfirmed but implied routes of how Kite made it back to the world of the living as a moe ant girl.

First we need to think back to greed island. And before we start, understand that usually luck based plot mechanics suck and are usually an escape plan to help authors from writing themselves into a corner and are on the same level as ‘and then the character woke up and it was all a dream’ or ‘oh no, big mom has memory loss’.

However, it is in fact NOT a contrived plot device when you instead have your terrorist bad guy use the magic luck enhancer buff as russian roulette lottery device forced onto hostages. Sickeningly cruel. Or sickeningly cool, depending on your disposition.

As a refresher, risky dice is a greed island card that can be activated giving the user a 19 in 20 dice roll chance to have good luck on their next action, in life, doing anything.

Buy a scratch card, kid, because you’re gonna win. That is, unless the 20 sided dice lands on the one side with the skull on, cos now you’re donezo. I hope you like bleeding blood out your ass because that’s you for the next 20 minutes as you slowly die.

And we don’t see another luck based mechanism quite like this again until we enter the chimera ant arc and see Gon Reunite with Kite. Trigger warning guys, you know what’s coming.

So we know Nen can be tricky business, and there are ways to strengthen your hatsu and really get the best bang for your buck with your ability by using vows, conditions, limitations and contracts. Kite in both creativity and mastery of his nen, implemented a luck based aspect to his power, ultimately materialising his ability, crazy slots.

Kite as a conjurer, summons a weapon to fight with when in battle simple enough. The kicker is, the weapon he draws is randomised and can be completely inappropriate for the combat a particular situation calls for. Which ironically, is most of the time, evident by Kite’s catchphrase, damn a bad roll huh. Most aptly shown when he drew a giant rifle to fight melee close combat with an ant. But he’s an absolute chad and he made it work. Mad props to
