The slogan that launched the tourist industry in the 1960s, Spain is different, has come to haunt historians. Much effort and energy have been expended ever since in endeavouring to show that Spain has not been different, but normal. Still, many of the defining features of the countrys past -- the civil wars, the weak liberalism, the Franco dictatorship -- are taken as evidence of its distinctiveness. A related problem is that few historians have actually placed Spains trajectory over the last two centuries within a truly comparative context. This book does so by tackling a number of key themes in modern Spanish history liberalism, nationalism, anticlericalism, the Second Republic, the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy. Is Spain Different? thereby offers a fresh and stimulating perspective on Spains recent past that is not only of interest to students of Spanish and European history alike, but also sheds new light on the current political debates regarding Spains place in the world. Akbar Ganji, called by some Irans most famous dissident, was a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. But, troubled by the regimes repressive nature, he became an investigative journalist in the 1990s, writing for Irans pro-democracy newspapers. Most notably, he traced the murders of dissident intellectuals to Irans secret service. In 2000 Ganji was arrested, sentenced to six years in prison, and banned from working as a journalist. His eighty-day hunger strike during his last year in prison mobilized the international human rights community. A passionate call for universal human rights and the right to democracy from a Muslim perspective, it lays out the goals and means of Irans democracy movement, why womens rights trump some interpretations of Islamic law, and how the West can help promote democracy in Iran (he strongly opposes U.S. intervention) and other Islamic countries. Throughout the book Ganji argues consistently for universal rights based on our common humanity (and he believes the worlds religions support that idea). But his arguments never veer into abstraction they are rooted deeply in the realities of life in Islamic countries, and offer a clear picture of the possibilities for and obstacles to improving human rights and promoting democracy in the Muslim world. Since his release from prison in March 2006, Akbar Ganji has been traveling outside Iran, meeting with intellectuals and activists in the international human rights community. With the advent of modernity, the sharing of resources and infrastructures rapidly expanded beyond local communities into regional, national, and even transnational space -- nowhere as visibly as in Europe, with its small-scale political divisions.
