A star of the college football team, the accused Capitol knife attacker was soon to graduate with a degree in finance from Christopher Newport University in Virginia. Yet over the course of the next two years, his life would take a frightening turn into paranoia and suicidal depression, and ultimately come crashing down. On Friday he rammed his car into a barricade at the U.S. Capitol and leapt out with a knife, killing one of the officers. He was shot and killed by police. Green was born in Fairlea, West Virginia - a poor, largely white, rural community of 1,700 people in the southeast of the state, close to the border with Virginia. One of ten children, he grew up with seven sisters and two brothers. By the time he was at high school, he had crossed into Virginia and was living 30 miles from Fairlea in Covington, Virginia. He attended Alleghany High School where he played football and ran track, earning All-District, All-Conference, and team MVP honors in 2013. Green then went on to Christopher Newport University, in Newport News, Virginia. 'Mr Green was a 2019 graduate of Christopher Newport University with a degree in finance. Mr. Green played on the Christopher Newport University football team in the fall 2017 and fall 2018 seasons,' said Jim Hanchett, CNU chief communications officer. Green was not known to police in Washington DC but he did have a record in another state, according to law enforcement sources. His Facebook posts, which have since been taken down, showed a deeply disturbed man spiraling out of control - believing that he was the victim of federal 'mind control', having suicidal thoughts and manic episodes, traveling to Africa to seek solace, and finding comfort in religion and extremist ideology. 'Satan's rule over us is up,' he said, in a Facebook post on March 17. He credited the controversial leader of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan, with saving him 'after the terrible afflictions I have suffered presumably by the CIA and FBI, government agencies of the United States of America.' On Instagram, he wrote: 'I have suffered multiple home break ins, food poisonings, assaults, unauthorized operations in the hospital, mind control.' Green believed that his troubles began in 2019, when, he thought, a former teammate and roommate drugged him with Xanax. Those involved thought that Green had made the story up, and doubted his allegations. The Democratic firebrand blasted the police department's four-legged 'Digidog' in a succession of Thursday tweets, two days after the cyber hound was filmed responding to a home invasion in her home borough of the Bronx. 'Shout out to everyone who fought against community advocates who demanded these resources go to investments like school counseling instead,' she wrote. 'Now robotic surveillance ground drones are being deployed for testing on low-income communities of color with under-resourced schools.' Ocasio-Cortez then argued that police funding that allows for new technology like the Digidog would have better served the community if it had been allotted to programs for education or housing. 'Please ask yourself: when was the last time you saw next-generation, world class technology for education, healthcare, housing, etc consistently prioritized for underserved communities like this?' she added in a follow-up tweet. Digidog, which was designed by Boston Dynamics and has a starting price of around $75,000, joined the NYPD last year. The blue and black rover, which weighs approximately 70 pounds, is equipped with lights, two-way communication, and video cameras, the department said. The robot is fitted with cameras to search an area and send back real-time footage and is powered by artificial intelligence to navigate on its own. The cyber canine can also climb stairs, see in the dark, and run at about three-and-a-half miles an hour. Two men were reportedly being held hostage in a Bronx apartment. They had been threatened at gun point, tied up and tortured for hours by two male assailants who pretended to be plumbers to gain access to the home. One of the victims managed to escape and called the police. Digidog was deployed and helped officers determine that the armed suspects were no longer inside the home. The police said they were still searching for the two men, who stole a cellphone and $2,000 in cash and used a hot iron to burn one of the victims. Digidog was also previously deployed in Brooklyn in October to help find a gunman hiding in a basement, and was also used in a hostage situation in Queens the following month. The 51-minute body camera video, which the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office released Friday, sheds new light on an encounter that's now the subject of a lawsuit filed by the boy's mother. Montgomery County police officers found the kindergartener after he wandered away from his Maryland school. In body camera footage, an officer can be seen putting the boy in the back of his police squad car, and the boy sobs as he is driven back to school. After the officers returned the boy to the school, the video shows, both stayed at the school and spoke with school employees. At one point, an officer can be heard calling the boy "a little beast." When the boy's mother arrives at school, the footage shows both officers encouraging her to beat her son. "We want you to beat him," an officer says. When his mother replies that she can't go to prison, the officer responds, "You don't go to prison for beating your child." The boy's mother is now suing Montgomery County, the two police officers involved in the incident and the county's board of education. Her lawyers say the boy suffered emotional trauma. "There is a certain way to treat a 5-year old boy," said James Papirmeister, a lawyer for the family. "Needing to beat him, like I said, came up at least 15, perhaps 20 times." The video also shows officers handcuffing the child in front of his mother. In the footage, an officer asks the boy, "You know what these are for? These are for people who don't know how to listen and don't know how to act." The boy was released about a minute after the officer handcuffed him, but throughout the encounter, the police encourage the mother to physically discipline her child. "All I can tell you is beat that a**," the officer says. "That's all I can tell you." Later, the officer says, "You can beat your child in Montgomery County, Maryland. In front of him and everybody else you can beat him." The officer adds, "And please don't leave no cuts or crazy cigarette burns, nothing like that. We're good, alright? Meeting adjourned." The Montgomery County Police Department said it has investigated the incident, but the department has not released the findings.
