DJI wrote all of us last week that they are changing the Process For Activating Software And Firmware Updates, and everybody will be booted out of their servers and forces to activate again to comply with new rules.

If you refuse to this, the will limit your aircraft to a maximum radius of 50m and height of 30 meters. They will also cut the live feed from the camera, basically render your Mavic useless.

You will have to be connected to the internet to download the current geospatial information and agree on the local rules of the region to unlock full capabilities of your Mavic.

This applies to both the DJI GO and GO4 app, as well as most of the DJI fleet of drones. I have included a link to the original press below: https://goo.gl/dKdM0r

What does this mean for us, we will not now until the firmware comes out later this week. Apart from the feeling that DJI want to control your behavior, and you will have to accept the local rules each the region you go to and

I don't think the majority of us users will experience a big difference if we fly within local rules of the region. I do think you have to accept geospatial information each time they are updated or if travel to another country.

I can see how this can create a big brother watching you kind of feeling, but the fact is you are not anonymous flying a DJI drone anyway as the record more or less everything about the flight, this just makes it more obvious.

I can see 2 main reasons for DJI to doing this.

Primary to protect their own business and make the pilot take full responsibility their actions. Many incidents have been reported lately where recreational flyers have put air traffic into danger.
Secondary for governments not to banDJI drones as legislations are tightened in many countries around the world, even limiting recreational flying.

I don't think this will be as bad as it sounds once we get used to it. My initial reaction was pretty skeptical as in DJI WHAT are you thinking? But let's see when the firmware is out

Let me know in the comments section below what you think of DJI new feature and how it will affect you.
