This is the second part of my long mailbag video. It contains some products, some explanations, and experiments. And it shows a bit of my side projects.
Chapters: 00:00:00 Intro 00:00:22 Versatile and cheap UPS 00:04:28 Small insulated power supply (with lots of explanation) 00:09:22 Effortless Extruder for flux etc.
I often get questions about how to measure voltage with microcontrollers. We will look at this topic, at the quality of built-in and external Analog-to-digital converters, and I will show you some “secrets.”
In this video, we will:
- See how ADCs work
- Look at how we can determine the quality of ADCs
- Compare the ADCs of different microcontrollers with external chips
- Learn how to tweak the calculations to get the best out of any ADC
- See how we can extend the range of ADCs
- Discover some “hidden” things of Microcontrollers and their ADCs
- Look at different external boards and their usage

How should we connect devices to our home network? Wireless or wired via Ethernet? Do these new POE boards from TTGO and Olimex change anything? Interesting questions. Let’s have a closer look.
We all know: Wireless IOT devices are cool. But they have some drawbacks. This is why we want to look at the alternative: Wired IOT devices

Over the last few month, a lot of new ESP32 boards appeared on our usual marketplaces. It is time for a closer look. That you can save your money and buy the board you really need.
Here I have most of the current “made in Asia” boards and I will give you an overview of their features and functions:
• Number of pins available for the user
• ESP32 Module and ESP32 chip revision used for the board
• Is the board breadboard-friendly?
• Does it have special features like OLED or a LiPo battery charging circuit?
• Does it have a flash button, and a USB connector?
• I will measure the current for the different
- idle
- Bluetooth active
- Wi-Fi active in STA, AP, and both modes
- Wifi and Bluetooth active
- Deep Sleep
• I will also measure the current during charging for the boards with a battery
• And I will comment positive and negative features and experiences with these boards

Can we enhance stability of ESP8266 with capacitors across the power pins?
What about this, if we use a voltage regulator?
How can we reduce power consumption during deep sleep, with and without voltage regulators?
Can we use a NodeMCU board for deep sleep low energy applications?

When we started our bonus project to communicate via the geostationary satellite QO-100, we created a to-do list:
- A high power 2.4GHz transmitter
- A sensitive receiver for 10GHz
- And an internet connection to the Adalm Pluto
In the last video, we built a prototype for the transmitter. We just need an antenna to complete the task. So this week, we will make a cheap first version of the receiver. And hopefully, listen to the first signals from space. And you will learn “PLL.”

In summer 2015 I decided to change from a passive YouTube viewer to the role of an active YouTube creator. Since then I learned a lot. Some things I believe are interesting for you if you think about starting your channel, but most of it is also interesting, maybe even important for viewers.
This is why I would like to let you see behind the scenes and discuss the vital question: Why to become a YouTube creator and why to continue to be one? The answering of this question should also lead to understanding some of the changes on this channel for 2018.
It is nine months since my last update in April. Back then this channel had around 20’000 subscribers. Today, it has more than 50’000. I take this fact as feedback that many of you like the content it provides.

Our connected devices usually have two connections: One for data and the other for power. If we use an Ethernet cable, we can combine data and power on the same cable. Very convenient. Do you know how this “Power over Ethernet” or PoE works and what we have to do to take advantage? Let’s have a closer look.
