UC Berkeley Mathematician Ian Agol is among the 2016 Breakthrough Prize recipients. Agol studies the topology and geometry of three-dimensional spaces, such as our own universe, and has won acclaim for solving five major conjectures by one of the giants in the field, the late William Thurston, a UC Berkeley alum. The Breakthrough Prize awards, given annually in the life sciences, physics and mathematics, celebrate scientists and seek to generate excitement about the pursuit of science as a career.
