In this exclusive movie, Italian architect Arturo Vittori explains how his wooden Warka Water structures can provide clean drinking water for rural communities
in the developing world.
The tower consists of a bamboo frame supporting a mesh polyester material inside. Rain, fog and dew condenses against the mesh and trickles down a funnel into a
reservoir at the base of the structure. A fabric canopy shades the lower sections of the tower to prevent the collected water from evaporating.
"Warka Water is currently represented by a tower that reaches up to the sky to collect moisture from the air and brings it down by gravity to the people,"
Vittori says.
The performance of the towers varies depending on the weather, but Vittori's aim is to create a structure that would enable the community to extract up to
100 litres of water a day without the reservoir running dry.

In this video I'll show you how I prune my fruit trees during the first summer after planting. These are all two year old trees and this first summer pruning is
necessary for size control and structure creation specific to backyard orchards with a wide variety of trees in a small space. Ideally I would have pruned these
trees in July, but due to a busy fire season in my job as a California firefighter, August was the earliest opportunity I had to summer prune these trees. After
pruning I painted newly exposed branches with IV Organics for sun protection. Subscribe to see how I create and maintain this new backyard orchard.

Modern Self Reliance

It's been a year since I started my off grid homestead life! We started with a small cabin, then put up a tiny bunk
house on stilts, built a smoker, workshop shed, root cellar, sauna, and even dug a pond to put fish in. It's been a
long year, but we've got a lot of things done.
In this episode, I finish up the off grid log cabin chinking, add venting to the root cellar, set up the rain catchment
system, feed the hungry pigs, even catch a big trout from the pond. What will come next?

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson.
It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid
conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance
from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a
completely self reliant lifestyle.
7 reasons why shipping container homes are a SCAM

Check out my latest follow-up video to this one where I elaborate on some of the points and address
some comments
Shipping container homes are glamorized all over social media but are they everything they are marketed as?
In this video, I uncover 7 reasons why you should stay away from shipping container homes.
Since the early 2000s, shipping containers have captured the imagination of designers and home builders worldwide.
They fit in with the very popular tiny house movement that advocates living simpler and in smaller homes.
The corrugated metal exterior of shipping containers gives it a trendy, industrial look. Thousands of shipping
containers are discarded every year. So, there is a sense of being socially responsible and environmentally conscious
when one rescues a shipping container from a junk yard and converts it into a home.
First issue: the size constraints. Standard shipping containers are 20 feet and 40 feet long and 8 feet wide. Most
of these containers are 8.5 feet tall but you can order custom ones that are 9.5 feet tall.
Second issue: A metal container works as a system, the idea that every part of this box is structural is false.
Every single cut that you make for plumbing, windows, doors, roof openings into its structural frame or corrugated
metal siding compromises its strength so you have to reinforce it with metal or wood.
Third issue: the thermal conductivity of steel. It’s not a good insulator, so you can expect the inside of these
containers to get very hot in summer and very cold in winter.
Fourth issue: the health risks that come with buying old shipping containers. You can track the locations that the
container has been to around the world, but you can’t track exactly what it has carried. It could have carried toxic
chemicals such as pesticides or fumigants and the contents might have leaked into the wooden floorboards.
Fifth issue: this type of building is not the best for all locations. It might make sense in coastal regions near
port cities where a container is readily available. If you are inland, the cost to transport it all the way to your
plot of land is not logical. Also, building with native materials is the most eco-friendly and cost-effective method.
Sixth issue: the idea that you are saving the environment when you use shipping containers and that is a highly
sustainable practice. Another important thing to consider is the carbon footprint of your container home. Steel
construction is not as environmentally friendly as wood.
Seventh issue: the idea that shipping containers can be the solution to the housing crisis in the world but, this
crisis is not a technology problem, it’s far more complex. Purely from a financial aspect, it would be cheaper to
build a homeless shelter with wood than build a complex shipping container building. This type of building can maybe
be 20% cheaper, not more. The modifications that you need to make a metal box livable aren’t cheap.

When Richard Weaver inherited 3 acres in the center of a golf-oriented community developed by his father
in Bozeman, Montana, he bucked family tradition and tore out the grass to create a self-sufficient urban
farm and underground greenhouse home.
He turned his father’s RV garage into an off-grid home relying on photovoltaics, rainwater and composting
toilet. Attached to the home, he built a half-buried (6-feet-under) greenhouse (walipini) to use the earth’s
heat to grow figs and fruits during the long Montana winters.
On the land surrounding the home, garden members (open to all) farm using permaculture techniques like planting
in guilds- layers of plants that support each other- to cut down on labor requirements. It’s a communal, not
community, garden so instead of individual plots, garden members share the work and the crop (making it easy to
take vacations or time off).
Weaver believes their farm could serve as a model for others. “When NYC hit 1 million people in the mid-1800s all
of their food was grown within seven miles. We have a much more severe climate than New York, but I would say we
could grow a lot of our food for 100,000 people in the valley if we had these. I did a calculation once that if we
had one thousand 2000-square-foot greenhouses we could produce a substantial amount of our fruit without having to
truck it in. But you’d need a thousand of them so we’d need a completely different economic model than we currently
have.”
Beyond the benefits of fresh, local produce, the garden also builds community, or what Weaver calls a bonded tribe.
“A bonded tribe being a group of people doing something to make a living together, in this case we’re growing food
together, and doing that bonds people in a way that say getting together and watching football on a couch doesn’t
bond people very well.”
