Today I take you along as I wander down a local beach and swamp, hunting for plants and soil amendments for the garden. We find sea purslane, Noni, and manchineel... and I theorize on making driftwood biochar and getting a truckload of seaweed for my garden. I also discover a great big pile of sea urchin shells which, of course, I bring home to throw in my garden beds. The ocean is loaded with minerals and the shoreline has plenty of edible and useful plants, not to mention a few poisonous ones!

This is great. I was looking for some ripe coffee cherries so I could save the beans and plant the seeds. Instead, I found a treasure trove of coffee seedlings. AWESOME! Germinating coffee isn't hard, but it's even easier when nature does it for you. These are Liberian coffee, I believe, Latin name Coffea liberica. Quite exciting. We also get a little look at the cocoa orchard and I explain why I'm not currently harvesting and processing chocolate.

Now this is a fun idea - and more useful than you might think!
We've been obsessed with making biochar for years, often making char in pits and open burns. We've also learned to make traditional charcoal, and have even used a Kon Tiki style biochar cone.
Yet recently we can across a video from @LiveOnWhatYouGrow sharing his method of making a biochar retort from two cans - for free! We had to give it a try. This is what we've discovered.

Fermentation, drying, canning, eating fresh... I've had to think more about food preservation this last week since our refrigerator died. Going without refrigeration isn't convenient, but it's certainly possible. Especially if you have an abundance of fresh bananas! Today I talk through four methods of going without a fridge. And - can you reuse canning jars? I think so!

Now THAT is a clickbait title!
The rain stopped at long last and I got out and did some recording. I figured it was high time to fire up the cob rocket stove my 9-year-old son improved. This cob stove really works great now. The draw through the higher chimney makes a world of difference, as you'll see. Got to get those ratios correct so the flow of air causes better combustion. I'm impressed. Building a cob rocket stove is so easy a kid can do it.

Here's the perfect in-ground long term survival food you can grow yourself - the true yam, AKA Dioscorea alata.
When I lived in North Florida, I planted lots of yams in my yard so I would have an emergency food supply if things went south. Now, three years later, I went back and dug up yams that are still growing and producing. This is the best cheap survival food you can grow in the south. Forget long term food storage buckets - with true yams, you can grow a one-year supply of food just by planting bulbils everywhere.
