The psoas can cause a lot of problems when it is tight and weak. But you can massage it out to restore normal length and function!
The psoas is often combined with the the iliacus muscles because they perform similar function. You may have heard of the iliopsoas or the iliopsoas complex. That is just these two muscles lumped together.
You can massage both of these muscles using the same technique. You just apply pressure in different places. For the psoas apply the pressure in the abdominal area and for the iliacus you apply the pressure to the front of the pelvis.
Use this self massage technique several times throughout the day for a few weeks and it will really help to keep your psoas at it's normal healthy length and function.

It's the end of the year and I'm bringing you one more beginner natural movement session to close out 2021! This workout is going to focus on foundation movements. This low-intensity natural movement workout will move you through lots of movements in a wide range of motion.

All the troubles we hear about stemming from minimalist shoes really doesn't have anything to do with the shoes. This argument puts the focus on the wrong thing. If you sit a lot, chances are your hips have tightened up. Today I'm going to share a hip stretch to improve mobility and eliminate pain. Tight hips can lead to a host of whole body issues including lower back pain.
It really important to restore your lost hip mobility if you want to keep your joints healthy. This simple stretch is one of my favorites for opening up my hips and improving my hip mobility. The stretch is best done with some sort of strap, but you can also get inventive with bolsters.
Since this is a passive stretch, don't forget to hold the stretch for a significant amount of time. You should be holding it for 2-5 minutes. This is a great one to do while you're watching TV!

Rocking is an important movement for learning to stabilize your spine. It's also a building block to learn how to front roll and backward roll properly.

I found a great resource for learning somatic exercises! I'm currently working toward my somatic movement instructor certification. I've found a resource that makes learning the exercises much easier than working through the book. Thomas Hanna's book is still handy but this resource address most of the challenges the book presented.

In this week's natural movement session were going to be working from side bent sit to build hip mobility. This session will be a little more advanced than previous sessions so you'll want to have some bolsters handy to help you get into the positions comfortably.
Like in every natural movement session, make sure to take your time and don't force the positions. Do what you can do and everything you do the session, it'll get a little easier. Side bent side is a fantastic position for hip mobility so just keep working at it and you'll get there!
