Today we take a look at the garden beds, some of the fruit trees, tonka beans, the acerola cherries and more. And man, these are sour acerola cherries! Just a wandering update video on what's happening here on the homestead.

Someone wrote me, horrified that I said you could put cooked food in compost. What about rats? And maggots? And lions and bears - oh my!? You might not get instant compost, but throwing down piles of leaves or burying a lasagna isn't a bad thing to do. Nature does extreme composting. C/N isn't the end-all. You can compost meat. You can break the rules. And you can delete my PDF! Keep rats of out compost with barriers... and keep maggots under control by burying or with black soldier flies. No big deal. I share lots of ideas in today's video.

I was asked about my recommendation for fruit trees along the Gulf Coast. Zone 8/9 is a great area for some fruit trees, but not for others. In my experience, the top three easy to grow fruit trees in the Deep South are the mulberry, the Japanese persimmon and the sand pear. All three grow quickly and produce an abundance of good fruit with very little care. I also add in a bonus tree - the fig! Figs are also easy to grow if you get the right variety. Another possibility is the loquat, but I do not really recommend it in the colder part of zone 8 because the fruit are often taken off by frost.

Growing fruit trees from seed is a lot of fun - and when you plant seeds right in the ground, they'll develop into strong trees without the shock of transplanting. Today I plant jackfruit seeds and coconuts, plus show you my bilimbi seedlings, my soursop trees, my cashew seedlings and other tropical fruit trees I've started from seed. Growing trees from seed takes time but it's worth it!

In today's video, David The Good covers different methods for pruning fruit trees and keeping trees small. Topics include coppicing, pollarding, espalier, training trees to a wire, backyard orchard culture, festooning, planting multiple trees in a single hole and more. In the Grocery Row Gardens, it's important to keep fruit trees little, as otherwise they'll shade the vegetables. When you prune and train fruit trees, you keep tree root systems under control as well.
We pushed the zone by espaliering a key lime tree against our south-facing wall. Protecting a tree from frost with this method allowed us to get key limes without fail. Training trees to a fan shape or training peaches to a vase shape allows you different outcomes as compared to letting a tree grow to its full height. You can grow LOTS of fruit trees in a small backyard if you don't let them get big.

Here's a closer look at capturing rainwater with swales, plus a look at our rain water cistern which holds 400 gallons off the roof... and is always full! The swales on contour out in the cocoa orchard really slow down the rain which is important during monsoon season. Plus, we see a hen laying in a new and irritating place.
