In episode 07 of the Bitwig Basics Series we look at midi editing, the piano roll. And also how to work with MPE (Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression data) in Bitwig.
As usual I give away my favourite short keys / key commands to work more swiftly in Bitwig Studio.
We look at the different functionalities Bitwig offers for core midi editing. Importantly, you have some nice sweet controls to introduce "chaos" to give your midi data more life.
The native plugins of Bitwig also give you direct MPE data capabilities. MPE is a quite new standard which stands for "MIDI Polyphonic Expression", or "Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression". In normal MIDI, Channel-wide messages (such as Pitch Bend) are applied to all notes being played on a single MIDI Channel. In MPE, each note is assigned its own MIDI Channel so that those messages can be applied to each note individually.
So MPE gives us the ability to do individual note glides on each note within a single midi track.

A quick Bitwig tutorial with the idea of how to create your own custom waveform synth and setup macros to control the sounds spread both in pitch and panning. Quick an easy!
If you are lazy you can download the preset below.
1. We start by adding a single cycle waveform to a sampler.
2. Setup basic modulations params and hook them up to macros.
3. Move the sampler into a Instrument Layer.
4. Duplicate the sampler so we have multiple instances.
5. Adjust the instances to get different versions and a wider sound.
6. Epic spread control with the macro!
7. Cake is ready to serve!

This year I wrote a different kind of Christmas song, more of a Christmas lullaby. =)
I love the old short film from 1982 called The Snowman and after watching it with my kids this year I got inspired to write this song.
The single is available on Spotify so please give it a spin:

I composed the song in Logic Pro X for the christmas of 2017.
The track features the awesome choir library from 8DIO called Insolidus and the solo vocalist Jenifer on the final chorus.
Enjoy and have a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones.

Gear to help you work smarter in the studio 2019. In this video we look at some tools that will ease up the strain on your body while working long hours doing audio editing, film editing, music production, animation etc. We look at how the Wacom Intous Pro will enhance the workflow in your DAW - Logic Pro X, Bitwig Studio 2 and FL Studio 20.
Work SMARTER In The STUDIO 2019 - How To IMPROVE your AUDIO EDITING.
Using A Drawing Tablet With Logic, FL & Bitwig.
I've been using the Wacom Intous Pro for a long time and never looked back. It has helped me ease up the strain and load on my wrists, shoulders and neck.

In this video we look at how to quickly get your vocal recordings to sit in the music mix. We discuss the importance of microphone technique, distance to mic (proximity), microphone type, vocal effects etc. Importantly how to mix those ad-libs to sit well in the background and not interfere with your lead vocal.
Today we are working in FL Studio 20, but the technique and plugins used are universal, and can be replicated in any type of DAW of choice.
The music is a new track that I am working on with a slightly dark / hip hop / rock feeling to it. It's in demo so it's by no means the finished product yet.
QUESTION OF THE DAY:
What's your favourite mic for recording vocals?

Just a quick walkthrough on one of the new tracks I composed recently.
A lot of melodic doubling on various instruments with various flavours. Been playing a lot of Skylanders with my kids thus the inspiration.
Modern adventure or RPG game music, maybe a town theme. Amaterasu is a goddess of the sun.
The last year I’ve been jumping between Logic Pro X, Bigwig and Studio One. But somehow I’m always drawn back into Logic since I know it inside out and it has a very nice score editor. hehe… Oh, and since I do a lot of video game scores Logic also never fails exporting seamless looping mp3s in splendid quality.
Some of the libraries used in the composition: Hollywood Strings, Albion, East West Symphony Play etc.
As you can see I used a piano sound from EXS24 Logic stock sounds, I could easily have switched to a better sounding piano but within a mix like this it really does not matter that much. You an go very very far with the stock sounds in Logic. Just add a touch of good reverbs and EQ.
Sorry for the quickness switching between the tracks but I wanted to show as much as possible through the video!

Let's break down a Pirate Game music loop I produced for Peak Games. We work with Studio One, but you can basically use any DAW to replicate this kind of music as long as you have the right samples. Importantly, we look at arrangement, chords, melody, instrumentation, layering. Furthermore, I explain why I selected the specific instruments for the cue.
Let me know what you think about this episode in the comments, thanks!
