In which JB imitates the inimitable Alec Steel while forging a sickle with a very basic setup. Pardon the atrocious accent. :-) Please consider subscribing for a blend of making things and philosophical musings.
In which JF explains why rote repetition isn't necessarily rote. Disciplined structured practice is actually the first step to greater freedom and creativity.

In which we successfully forge weld two pieces of bloomery iron into a ingot using a stone anvil, a rock for a hammer, and several pairs of split-branch tongs. In other words, we forge welded iron, from scratch, with no metal tools!
This has been a bit of a watershed moment for me (JB), since I have been working toward this goal for 7 years now. It feels really good to be posting this one.
Once again, we are super grateful that Andy from How to Make Everything came out to film with us. He contributed much of the footage for this video. Check out his video of our Iron smelt here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmknPnU5QNs&t=3s

This is the book where I first found the phrase logos politikos. It's an excellent collection of essays about Greek rhetoric (Amazon affiliate link:) https://amzn.to/2YH1PZ7

"New" has a connotation in the modern era, and that connotation suggests that "new" is better than "old." Not always.

In which we talk with Hans from Archeon about his smelting strategies--furnace design, slag management, airflow, and more. Archeon is a live history museum in the Netherlands we visited several months ago and we revisited this footage in preparation for the smelt we're doing next week.
