"Gumfire" - Wood Art for the Creative Relief Society Australian Bushfire Appeal
Introducing "Gumfire", my first purely artistic woodworking piece designed specifically for the Creative Relief Society Bushfire Charity Auction raising money for WIRES to assist in their work caring for the native wildlife decimated by the 2019-20 Australian Bushfires.

This shortened version, like the piece itself, is purely for show. There is a longer "Making Of" version for those interested in a full commentary of the process here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ-cMoFd1r0

"Gumfire" is reclaimed Red Gum from my grandfather's shed and Spotted Gum salvaged from the scrap bin of a friend's recent cafe build. The wood has been sculpted into a eucalyptus leaf and gum nut design ubiquitous with the Australian bush. The leaf tips have been given a light shou sugi ban char reminiscent of the damage from the bushfires and the gum nuts highlighted with a colourful epoxy resin inlay representing the regeneration that will follow the flames.

The Auction & Exhibition will be held on Feb 7th, 2020 in Brisbane. Details are available on the Creative Relief page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/creativereliefsociety

For those unable to attend but who would like to contribute to help the animals with a WIRES Donation: https://www.wires.org.au (Please mention Creative Relief & Gumfire in your comments so they know who sent you ?)

I would also like to extend a big thanks to Darren from Woodstheworstthatcanhappen? for getting me involved in this undertaking. A worthy cause I hope I've done justice to and matched the "Flora or Fauna" brief adequately - Find Darren here:

Finally, another thanks to my Geocaching buddy Tronador who supplied the bushfire images in the opening sequence from the Blue Mountains this year.
