Leo does not often come out of his den in the winter.
Leo! (the video I thought I was posting yesterday lol). Rare footage of Leo out of his bed. Susan says Leo eats, uses the rest room, goes outside for maybe 15 minutes - and the rest of the time he is in bed. Jenny, Amy, Sonya, and Rosie are the only ones that like to spend time outdoors each day in the cold winter weather. Please consider a donation to help us in our work! We can’t do it without you! A lot of you ask if we ever see the animals again after we have released them. We do!! This is three of last years fawns that have teamed up with a deer we raised from the year before - all raiding the bird feeder.

Leo munching on an afternoon salad.
We often get asked what the bears eat. The bears have a varied diet and like people they all have preferences.
Most love meat, but two of our bears won't touch it. Some love strawberries, others hate them.
In general the bears get fed twice a day. In the morning they get meat, vegetables and some dog kibble (taste of the wild - salmon) and in the afternoon they get greens, vegetables, lots of fruits and grains/bread. They also get various nuts, and as a treat an occasional pastry or marshmallow.
They can't eat bananas. For whatever reason, bananas make them very sick. They also hate potatoes.
The bears eat about 30 lbs of food a day. Less in the winter. While they don't fully hibernate, they do slow down, eat much, much, less and are less active ... sleeping much of the day.

Yesterday we got the call about an injured baby black squirrel. The woman said she saw him yesterday in her yard, dragging his hind leg but he ran away. Then he was back. He came right up to her and she was able to get him in a cat carrier. The squirrel must have been attacked by something. He had multiple puncture wounds and the right femur was fractured and severely displaced. Susan rushed him to Dr. Joe at Catskill Veterinary Services. They immediately examined the squirrel and determined surgery was an option for him. Into surgery he went where he had to get some pins placed to keep the leg stable. Hopefully nerve function will be fine after the leg heals. He will get rechecked in 2 weeks and xrays again. Strict rest, antibiotics, and pain meds are critical right now. We are hoping that he will make it. At least he was given every chance, thanks to the woman who rescued him, Susan and to the great staff at Catskill. Thank you all for caring. Hang in there little buddy. We got you.....
