Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania video game developed and published by Australian studio Team Cherry. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows in February 2017, and later for macOS and Linux in April 2017. The game tells the story of a titular Knight, on a quest to discover the secrets of the long abandoned insect kingdom of Hallownest, whose depths draw in the adventurous and brave with its promise of treasures and answers to ancient mysteries. Hollow Knight's gameplay is primarily focused on exploration, platforming and combat. Players explore a large interconnected world using a variety of movement and combat techniques. In classic Metroidvania style, there are areas of the world that the player cannot access until they obtain particular items or abilities. Maps for each area can be bought from the cartogragher, Cornifer, generally hidden somewhere within the zone. Cornifer leaves small hints that leads to his location such as scattered pieces of paper and a hum that can be heard while in the area. The player can also buy upgrades that place markers on the map or allow them to reveal parts of the map as they explore. Saving the game can only be done on benches to rest on found throughout the world. The game's combat is focused around using the Knight's nail, a weapon that resembles a sword, to strike enemies above, below, or to left and right. The nail can be upgraded to do more damage as the game progresses and can also gain special attacks by focusing energy. Many areas have a 'boss' enemy that the player must defeat in order to continue, and there are a number of sub-bosses that drop useful rewards or upgrades. Defeated enemies drop Geo, a currency that the player can use to buy items from shopkeepers. Striking enemies also earns the player SOUL, a resource that can be used to either heal from damage or unleash special abilities such as long range spells and blasts. If the player is killed, they respawn at the last place they rested/saved, lose all their Geo and the ability to hold the maximum amount of SOUL. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky is a 2008 first-person shooter survival horror video game with role-playing elements. It was developed by Ukrainian developer GSC Game World and published by Deep Silver as a prequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The player assumes the identity of Scar, a mercenary tasked with stopping a group of Stalkers from reaching the center of the Zone, a forbidden territory surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The game uses much of the same regions as Shadow of Chernobyl, while introducing several new areas such as the abandoned town of Limansk. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky introduces features to the series, including the ability to customize weapon and armor, as well as participate in faction wars. This game combines elements of first-person shooters ("twitch-based" aiming, with a first-person perspective), survival horror (ammo-scavenging in a frightening atmosphere with powerful monsters), and role-playing video games (inventory management, quests, character interaction, armor types, and defense stats). The most significant gameplay addition since Shadow of Chernobyl is the faction wars system. Different factions will struggle for territory, attacking to gain territory and then defending to keep it, while others then try to retake it. The player will be able to join and help factions in their battles. The stronger a faction becomes, the better equipment the traders can provide and their soldiers can use. The player character is a mercenary, and may do missions for any faction or remain completely neutral without disrupting the necessary progression of the game. Each of the main factions provide services, most importantly access to a trader and an engineer. While Scar is always aligned with Clear Sky, and his ultimate goal is to defeat Strelok, he can fight against or ally with the four other factions in the Zone (Loners, Duty, Freedom, and Bandits). The Swamp-dwelling Renegades or the Military factions cannot be joined. Careful choice of faction alignment needs to be considered in some parts of the story, for it may be difficult to progress further if the Stalker who the player is interacting with is hostile, has needed information, or is essential to triggering the next stage. Other gameplay advancements since the first game include a deepened weapon customization system with the ability to repair damaged gear and add modifications that improve weapons and suits. Anomalies are harder to notice and now contain the artifacts in the game, which require a detector to locate. Non-player characters are given the ability to use hand grenades, take cover dynamically, and use "blind-fire" techniques. Light machine guns have been introduced. There are guides in the zone who will provide fast-travel for a fee. Emissions, powerful waves that are sometimes visible or invisible (determinant by intensity), unleash lethal radiation, psi-emissions, and other unknown particles and energy directly from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, directly affecting the Noosphere in The Exclusion Zone, making it deadly to all lifeforms except specific mutants. Emissions also occur on an infrequent basis, requiring the player to take cover in a building or underground area pointed out by the PDA. Planescape: Torment is a role-playing video game developed by Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment. The game takes place in locations from the multiverse of Planescape, a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fantasy campaign setting. The game's engine is a modified version of the Infinity Engine, which was used for BioWare's Baldur's Gate, a previous D&D game set in the Forgotten Realms. Planescape: Torment is primarily story-driven, with combat not being prominently featured. The protagonist, known as The Nameless One, is a man who is immortal, but with the cost of him forgetting everything if killed. The game focuses on his journey through the city of Sigil and other planes to reclaim his memories of these previous lives, and to discover why he was made immortal in the first place. Several characters in the game may join The Nameless One on his journey; most of these characters have encountered him in the past or have been influenced by his actions in some way. Planescape: Torment is built on BioWare's Infinity Engine, which presents the player with a pre-rendered world in an isometric perspective in which player characters are controlled. The game's role-playing ruleset are based on those of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition. In Planescape: Torment, the player takes the role of "The Nameless One", an immortal man with amnesia on a quest to learn why. Risen is a single-player fantasy-themed action role-playing game, developed by the German company Piranha Bytes and published by Deep Silver. Risen is set on Faranga island, the visual of which is inspired by Sicily. The environment is mostly mountainous, with different climates and Mediterranean vegetation. The island is dominated by an active volcano and inhabited by a wide variety of creatures; the island has buildings and suggestive names from the Spanish Inquisition in Sicily and the Norman period. There are two main settlements on Faranga: Harbor Town, under the rule of Bandit chief Don Esteban, and the Monastery, where mages and scholars study and research magic. Dotting the islands are small settlements and farms, as well as lone dwellings of hunters and druids. After mankind used magic to drive away the gods ruling them, they inadvertently unleashed the Titans, ancient beings previously sealed away by the Gods. On Faranga island, ancient temple ruins spontaneously rise from the ground, providing access to a network of interconnected underground areas such as catacombs and dungeons. The player technically has access to most of the island right from the beginning of the game. However, the paths leading further into the island are almost always blocked by numerous wild creatures that can easily overwhelm and kill a beginner character. After the player character acquires better skills and equipment, he can explore the island with much more freedom. Risen has smaller areas that can't be accessed until later. Creatures do not respawn in the first part of the game, but do so in later parts. The island is also said to contain easter eggs. Risen is an action RPG with a strong focus on combat. The combatants, including the player and enemies, has access to different attack moves, as well as parries, blocks, and dodges. Whether an attack connects depend on the positioning of the combatants, the usage of shields (without shields, player cannot block projectiles or attacks from shorter creatures) as well as the nature of the attack (stronger attacks can knock aside shields, leaving the target open for follow up strikes; magic attacks cannot be blocked, etc.). Players have access to a wide array of weapons divided into 3 melee types (swords, axes and staves) and two ranged types (bows and crossbows).
