Death comes for us all eventually. Philosophers have long been perplexed by how we ought to feel about death. Many people fear death and believe that death is bad for the person who dies. But is death bad for us, and if so, how is its badness best explained? If we do not survive death if death is simply a state of nothingness how can death be bad for us? If death is bad for us, do we have good reason to live as long as possible? Would an immortal life really be a good human life or would even an immortal life eventually become tedious and make us long for mortality? This volume presents fourteen philosophical essays that examine our attitudes toward mortality and immortality. The topics addressed have become more urgent as scientists attempt to extend the human lifespan, perhaps even indefinitely. This book invites the reader to critically appraise his or her own attitudes toward death and immortality by exploring the ethical, metaphysical, and psychological complexities associated with these issues. **Review This new collection of essays considers whether and when death is bad for those who die, as well as whether and when it would be good to live forever. The collection will be of great value to anyone who thinks seriously about mortality, and is a welcome addition to the literature on the philosophy of death. (Steven Luper, Murchison Term Professor, and Philosophy Department Chair, Trinity University) This is a wonderful collection of original contributions on cutting-edge topics and literature of great human interest, with a helpful introductory essay. (John Fischer, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, University of California, Riverside) That the essays in this volume have stimulated so many questions in this short review should be taken as a testament to their interest -- and hence to the excellence of this volume as a whole [] Immortality and the Philosophy of Death is an extremely valuable addition to the philosophical literature on these fascinating issues. ReviewMr. McManus cuts to the heart of our top leaders hidden one-world objectives and their crucial dependence upon a paramount role for the U.S. military. Calling on years of collected resources, Mr. McManus traces the thread of conspiracy from the Council on Foreign Relations through the United Nations to the betrayal of our military into the hands of the UN by Insiders committed to world government and the demise of our own autonomy. By the time the reader reaches the last page he is aghast at the full realization of the meaning of the gigantic web being spun by our own home-grown enemies. The nub of this web is, of course, the Council on Foreign Relations. For those not yet familiar with the origin, history, and agenda of Americas semi-secret ruling cabal, Mr. McManus has added a special appendix on the CFR. -- The New American magazine, April 17, 1995From the Back CoverIn Changing Commands, John F. McManus exposes the plans of U.S. leaders to convert Americas military form defender of the nation to enforcer of the new world order. Changing Commands carefully documents steps that have ullCreated war for political power building * Converted revulsion for war into support for the United Nations * Entangled the U.S. in pacts and treaties at the expense of American lives and freedom * Circumvented exclusive congressional power to declare war * Cast aside the constitutional limitations on the commander in chief * Demoralized the military by allowing homosexuals to serve and by placing women in combative roles * Converted the U.S. military into the UNs globocop * Set in motion the disarmament of America and the simultaneous armament of the UN. lulBetrayal of our military ultimately means betrayal of the nation. Must reading for all patriotic Americans and especially for members of our Armed Forces!

This book explores the activities of the Nazi regimes vast leisure programme. Shortly after coming to power in Germany, it began a large-scale undertaking to bring happiness and a good life to so-called Aryan Germans, carried out by the Nazi leisure organization Kraft durch Freude. Julia Timpe traces Kraft durch Freudes practices and propaganda from 1933 through the Second World War, and analyses Nazi-organized sports classes, entertainment events, and beautification campaigns for industrial sites and the countryside, as well as Kraft durch Freudes activities in entertaining German soldiers and concentration camp guards. Contributing to newer scholarship which focuses on the integratory force of the Nazi promise of a unified racial community of all Aryan Germans, this book highlights that Kraft durch Freudes everyday production of joy was central to Nazism, closely connected to the destructive side of the Third Reich, and ultimately a major reason for Nazisms success among the German population. **

There's a Road to Everywhere Except Where You Came From is the memoir of a young Midwestern man struggling to carve out a life as a writer, and to find meaning, or at least a job, in his new and alien landscape of New York City. In a voice at once coolly detached and utterly confident, we follow Bryan Charles's journey navigating love, work, and family, from the streets of Manhattan to the upper floors of corporate America. This is a gripping meditation on the self, ricocheting between the multitudes and solitude, and between the industrial-turned-residential spaces of Brooklyn and the towers of the World Trade Center, where his life takes an unexpected turn. Charles's story is a spare, honest, and often hilarious narrative of expectation and loss, and of the ordinary becoming the extraordinary.
