https://carssimplified.com/ • In this third episode, the GTO suspension ends up completely disassembled! The most difficult challenges in the disassembly process are tackled and some tools are both rented and purchased. Maybe a part or two as well.
Tools used include: • Roto-head ratchet • Rubber mallet • 2lb dead blow hammer • Bushing press kit (2018 update) • Front end service kit (2018 update) • Spring compressor (2018 update) • Many socket sizes (for their intended purpose) • 30mm socket (for unintended purpose) • Compound needle nose pliers

Steve quickly explains how to install 4Runner running boards on his 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road. These Greenlane Offroad running boards are a bit on the expensive side, but they have fantastic build quality and are pretty cool looking in powder coat black, too!

http://carssimplified.com/ • Steve just got back to Connecticut where he can edit almost 400 GB of video footage, which is most of what remains of Cars Simplified: Season Three. This will include getting the GTO back on the road after a cooling system failure and getting a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix engine rebuilt.

This video explains what bulb grease/dielectric grease is used for, what the best practices are, and generally why you should consider using it for most of your light bulbs.
Inexpensive bulb grease: https://amzn.to/2qR8sIY
Larger amount: https://amzn.to/2NoXuC7
Bulb grease can also be called dielectric grease. Both of them are a clear-white silicone-based thick grease that is waterproof and has excellent sealing properties. Applying it properly on your lighting components will extend their life, make assembly and disassembly easier, and reduce the chances of costly damages happening.
Dielectric grease is not conductive, so unless you are confident that you will be still be making metal to metal contact at all electrical connections, it is better to not risk putting any bulb/dielectric grease on the electrical contacts. Use your best judgement and apply only where you are confident.

https://carssimplified.com/ - Does your car look like it is sagging or too low? This video will show you how to diagnose the problem so you don't have to throw parts at the problem, as well as help you determine if there is a problem at all! You won't even have to take off your wheels!
Ride height/ground clearance can be affected by suspension damage, sagging springs, worn bushings, worn strut mounts, or even purposely made that way with cut springs or performance springs.

The 5th gen 4Runner air filter replacement is a fairly easy job, but it's always nice to see it done before tackling it yourself. The fifth generation 4Runner SUV goes from model years 2009 to 2024, with a facelift in 2015. Most of them have this V6 engine, so this will be a nearly identical task on a 2010 or a 2020. Here are a bunch of air filter options I've found:
49350 - WIX: https://amzn.to/3ojtAFx *
Made in China, good quality, used in video.
A36122 - Purolator engine air filter: https://amzn.to/3mzS7pz *
Made in Mexico, USA brand, good quality.
17801-38051 - Toyota (rebranded Denso) filter: https://amzn.to/3GQkrus *
Made in Japan, original quality.
CA10835 - FRAM Extra Guard: https://amzn.to/41xmiwe *
Made in USA, low quality (it does not include the pre-filter mesh).
143-3025 - Denso First Time Fit: https://amzn.to/3oa3DYT *
Made in China, same brand as Toyota filters, but different country of origin! Also, the site says this doesn't fit, but reviews say it does.
33-2438 - K&N: https://amzn.to/40kNUDI *
Made in USA, reusable, but if you're going with K&N, you'll have more fun with their full intake kit.
XA6122 - ECOGARD: https://amzn.to/3mEG1LB *
Made in China, okay quality. Make sure the better options aren't cheaper than this one (they often are).
28-20438 - AEM: https://amzn.to/41yE6a9 *
Made in USA, reusable. I have no experience with this brand, but have heard good things. Very tempted to try them out, but if I do, I may just get the full kit.
The example vehicle in this video is a 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road.

Ross Chastain's wall ride at Martinsville Speedway was a wild way to secure a spot in the final run for the NASCAR Cup Championship! Instead of just another Hail Melon reaction video, Steve discusses how this move worked, why it could only happen at Martinsville, what NASCAR needs to do about it, and if this move could show up in other forms of motorsports.
The "wall ride" is a move that is well known in digital motorsports, since every kid struggling to win a race has tried it at least once. In games like Gran Turismo, where vehicle damage is minimal or nonexistent, the riding the wall has almost no consequences, unless the game has some sort of collision penalty. What Ross Chastain did on the last lap of the 2022 Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway is something that has never been seen before outside of video games, and no one thought it would actually work.
However, now we know that, at least under the right conditions, it can work! What happens now, especially with one race left in the season at another small track with minimal banking? Will another driver attempt a wall ride? Will a few drivers give it a go? Will this decide the championship finale at Phoenix? Lets discuss the possibilities!
While the finish of this race was fantastic, I'm not sure I want it to happen again, as it will be less impressive and probably more dangerous. Definitely worthy of the 2022 highlights reel, though!

The 2004, 2005, and 2006 Pontiac GTOs are great cars, but it's good to know about their common problems and issues before buying one, daily driving one that has been sitting, or adding a bunch of power.
0:00 • Intro/GTO Stock Strut Mounts
These strut mounts fail remarkably quickly... Absurdly quick! One forum post claimed they failed on a new car before it reached 10,000 miles.
* Nolathane Polyurethane Strut Mounts for GTOs: https://amzn.to/3ouiUiC
(I used Whiteline strut mounts that look just like this, but their Amazon listing currently has the wrong image: https://amzn.to/3blR8kH )
0:39 • LS1 & LS2 Oil Starvation
The LS engines in these GTOs have a front sump design which can cause oil to pull away during hard acceleration, leading to there being no oil there for the oil pump to pull in.
1:09 • GTO Wiring Harness Near Glove Box
A wiring harness behind the glove box is known to wear through the insulation, shorting some circuits and diverting power to others.
1:57 • LED Taillight Issues on GTOs
LED lighting is awesome, but GTOs seem to have an issue with one particular bulb pair being LEDs instead of a more traditional bulb. The taillights seem to deactivate the traction control whenever not enough amperage passes through their circuit, so putting in a 6 ohm resistor parallel to one of the tail light circuits allows for enough amperage to make the problem go away.
2:36 • GTO Front Radius Rod Bushings
These bushings cause suspension issues but also create weird handling conditions under braking, making the car unstable, unpredictable, and less safe. Fortunately, replacements are available in three varieties.
* Pedders front radius rod bushing, red polyurethane: https://amzn.to/3hW8829
3:30 • Pontiac GTO Headliner Sag
The headliner often comes loose and sags on these cars. That is all.
3:58 • Rear Spring Sagging on GTOs
Rumor has it that GTOs arrived at the dealer with sagging springs because they were strapped down too tight when shipped from Australia to the US. True or not, the stock rear springs on these cars seem to sag pretty early on.
4:53 • Final Drive Gear Whine/"Differential Whine" in GTOs
The actual differential unit on these cars doesn't whine, the final drive gears do. But, since the whole differential case/assembly is often just called the differential, people refer to this problem as differential whine. This might be fixed with a proper gear alignment (which is usually the fix on other cars) but Torco makes a gear oil that is known to quiet down GTO differentials.
