Putin mocked the US and the West for its decline in values and culture while castigating the US for the deaths of 900,000 people and 30 million refugees due to its wars in Iraq, Libya, Syria and elsewhere. Russia has defeated all invaders and will decisively win this war because we are strong and united. "Truth is on our side."

The first time I went to the Donbass was in March 2022, the beginning of the Special Military Operation, or what Europe calls a war against Ukraine from Russia, although there was never an official declaration of war, not from Ukraine, nor from the side of Western countries. For Russia it’s a Special Military Operation not a war.

The great decoupling has finally occurred. With Russia suspending its participation in the New START arms control treaty, Russia and the west have gone their own separate ways. And in the process arms control appears to be dead in the water. More troubling times ahead.
