In this video I demonstrate my limited knowledge of the use of scrollsawmania.com to create a pattern for an oval bowl. Then I cut the pattern and build the bowl. This is a very simple procedure and can get more complex with some elaborate bowls. Perhaps I will get more adventurous in the future This is a 4 inch by 5 inch bowl, a little more complex than a round bowl but not by much. I will attempt the less simple ones after a little practice with drawing the patterns.

A scroll saw project done in a step by step tutorial fashion. It is a lucet an old weaving tool said to have come from the vikings. It is a simple project and a useful item for making a useful cord. The link to the pattern is below. The pattern has a link to an instructional video to teach how to use it. I will include that link also

Another model from Steve Good. I altered the pattern a little bit, changed the icon on the sail and used some left over quarter inch material for the main boat body, instead of ply. Link to the pattern below

This video is about tools you need for scrolling and tools that are helpful to cut and finish a project. It covers the type of drills you can use and the sizes of drill bits I use. Also covered is finishing tools such as sanders and clamps. Also needed is some way to handle patterns such as computers, phones, tablets and printers. Below are links to some items shown and links to web sites that sell scrolling accessories.

The pattern for this project came from "Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts" Issue number 70 , Spring of 2018, by Gabriel Schama. Eight layers of baltic birch plywood (one eight inch thick) lightly stained. I added a thin frame to cover the plywood edges.

This video is about cutting multiple items on the scroll saw with one cut. To do so I demonstrate the method I have used the most, that of taping two or more layers of material together to create what basically is then handled as a single piece of material. I then apply the pattern and cut it normally to make multiple, identical items. There are other ways of layering the materials. With three thin layers you can staple the outer edges on all four sides with the staples piercing the top and bottom layers with the third layer sandwiched between. You can also use small brads or nails to nail the layers together outside of the pattern as long as your brads/nails reach all the way through and do not protrude out the bottom. I have used all of these methods but almost always use the tape method. Just be sure to tape it tightly and avoid cutting through the edge as much as possible. You may have to hold down inside the pattern with your fingers as you cut in some sections to keep the upper layer from flopping up and down. A number 5 blade will work on this but if you stack thick with a hardwood a larger skip tooth blade at a slower speed may be needed so as not to burn the wood.

In this video I make a bowl with eight petals from Carole Rothman's book "Scroll Saw Wooden Bowls". She made hers from walnut but I am using less expensive woods to practice and perfect the procedures before I use an exotic wood. I used the inflatible sander on this one and did some real shaping for the first time. I wanted to thin the rim of the bowl and give it a little outward flare. I think I was mostly succesful. It seems that I made some error in the angles as the entry holes were a little off and the rings did not line up as well as my last two or three bowls. It required a lot of sanding to make everything match but I think I got it looking ok in spite of that.

In this video I try to demonstrate some of my methods to make clean sharp turns with the scroll saw. These are things that I do that I have developed from reading and watching videos and doing hundreds of projects over about ten years. I still make changes or add twists to what I do from time to time. These methods may not be the only way or even the best way but they are some of the way I do things right now. Each person should develop their own techniques over time with experience. I hope what I show in this video can help someone start their own path to their own methods.

Five ornaments from Steve Good. The two round ornaments are just two of a set in one pattern. I cut the ones I liked the best. The nativity tree I stack cut from different woods to make two that I could mix and match. These are fairly easy patterns with the deer antlers and the snowflakes being the most delicate to cut. I used a #3 blade on most of them and a #5 on the stack cut. Everything here is cut from wood in my growing scrap pile.
