Overview
It takes a lot to out-luxe a Mercedes-Benz S-class, but the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-class manages to do just that. This ultra-luxury sedan is a worthy rival to the Bentley Flying Spur and the Rolls-Royce Ghost, and it offers more high-end features than we can list. A pair of twin-turbo engines are on offer—a V-8 and a V-12—and all models come with all-wheel drive. The stretched body makes it ideal for being chauffeured, especially with the optional reclining and massaging rear seats, which beckon riders to relax and live their best lives. While its rivals have more curb appeal the Maybach S-class's styling is tame by contrast, allowing it to slip into traffic without drawing too much attention.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the hood of every S580 sedan is a 496-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. Going with the S680 swaps in a 621-hp 6.0-liter V-12. All models will come with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The V-8 makes 33 more horsepower than the old S560 from 2020, and it packs quite a punch. During our testing, the S580 rocketed to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. But that's not really the most impressive thing about the Maybach S-class. During our time with the car, we were impressed with the ride quality and the nearly silent cabin—we recorded an extremely low 64 decibels inside the car while cruising at 70 mph. The V-12's power rating is the same as the 2020 S650 model and does not benefit from a 48-volt hybrid system, but we haven't had a chance to test the new one yet. An air suspension and an active sound cancellation system are both standard in the new model, which helps the car deliver a silky, ultra-quiet ride; the S-class also offers rear-wheel steering which should help with navigating this big sedan through tight city streets.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Maybach S-class has a seven-inch longer wheelbase than the already-large Benz-branded S-class sedan, which provides even more stretch-out space inside its leather-lined cabin. So many luxury features are standard in the Maybach we couldn't possibly list them all here, but all models will come with exquisite leather on virtually every interior surface; a 64-color interior ambient lighting system; heated and ventilated front seats with massage and four-position memory settings; heated rear seats with power adjustments and massage; an air ionizing system with a signature fragrance; and a panoramic sunroof. For buyers who intend to be chauffeured, Maybach can add the optional Executive Rear Seat Plus package, which includes rear-seat folding tables, an extended center console, additional rear-seat wood trim, and temperature-controlled cup holders. Also optional are electrically-operated rear doors, a refrigerator, and Maybach-branded champagne flutes.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Like the Benz S-class, the Maybach comes standard with Mercedes's latest MBUX infotainment interface displayed on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is also standard, and all models also come with an augmented-reality navigation system that displays easy-to-follow video directions on both the infotainment display and the car's head-up display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with wireless connectivity, 6 USB-C ports, a 30-speaker Burmester stereo system, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and a rear-seat entertainment system are all standard features.

Overview
Even though it wears a plus-size wardrobe, the 2024 Audi S8 handles curves like a much smaller sports sedan. Based on the A8 luxury sedan, the S8 ups the ante with trick performance features such as rear-wheel steering and a torque-vectoring rear differential to achieve handling heroics. On top of all that, it swaps the A8's V-6 for a twin-turbo V-8 with 563 horsepower. The roomy cabin is ideal for relaxing while covering long distances, so you get the best of both worlds. A host of high-tech features provides plenty of opportunity for connectivity, but if you want to tune out the outside world, there's no better way to do that than to open it up and let that V-8 sing. The S8's athleticism is rare in the large luxury sedan segment, and its only real competitors are the Maserati Quattroporte Trofeo and the Mercedes-AMG S63, both of which cost quite a bit more.

Overview
The 2021 Audi e-tron and e-tron Sportback are all-electric luxury crossovers that straddle the line between the present and the future. While their battery-powered, all-wheel-drive powertrains deliver up to 222 miles of EPA estimated driving range and foreshadow the death of internal-combustion engines, their refined driving manners and serene interior spaces are similar to the non-electric Audi models currently occupying showrooms. These recognizable traits as well as their traditional exterior designs make the e-trons appear less revolutionary than luxury EV rivals such as the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X. Although the 2021 e-tron and e-tron Sportback have shorter driving ranges than the Jaguar or Tesla, Audi believes this more conservative approach will make the transition from traditional gas-fed models to all-electric vehicles easier for buyers.
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
Beneath the e-tron's heavily creased bodywork are two electric motors, one located at the front axle and the other at the rear. Together they provide electronic all-wheel drive, but the rear motor does most of the work. In regular driving situations, they make a combined 355 horsepower and 414 lb-ft of torque. However, putting the transmission in Sport mode briefly unlocks 402 ponies and 490 lb-ft. Our initial driving impressions revealed that the e-tron was swift and composed. Its snappy acceleration is typical of electric vehicles, and the smooth and quiet ride quality confirmed its luxury bona fides. Its stopping system expertly blended its traditional brakes with the obligatory regenerative braking system. However, we were disappointed that its regen wasn't aggressive enough to enable one-pedal driving during our test of the Sportback model. Still, the e-tron demonstrates traditional SUV characteristics with the ability to tow up to 4000 pounds.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
The regular e-tron has an EPA-estimated driving range of 222 miles, and the Sportback version is rated at 218 miles. The former figure is higher than before, but both versions still trail rivals such as the 2020 Jaguar I-Pace (234 miles) and the Tesla Model X Long Range (up to 371 miles). Every e-tron is compatible with 150.0-kW DC fast-chargers that allow it to replenish 80 percent of its battery in about 30 minutes. Those using a more conventional 240-volt outlet will be able to fully charge the e-tron in about nine hours.

Toyota has revealed the new 300-series generation of the Land Cruiser SUV.
It has new engines including a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 and a 3.3-liter turbodiesel V-6.
We won't get this new model in the U.S., but we may get something similar as the next-gen Lexus LX.
Toyota doesn't redesign the Land Cruiser too often, so the arrival of this new 300-series model is a big deal. Compared with the outgoing 200-series iteration, this new Land Cruiser is lighter, more powerful, and has a far more modern interior. It'll go on sale in global markets but likely won't reach the U.S.—at least not in this form. After the Land Cruiser's recent discontinuation, the prevailing rumor is that America will only get the Lexus version of this new model, as the next-generation LX.
While we wait to see what Toyota does with this new model on our shores, we can dive into the specs. It weighs a claimed 440 pounds less than its predecessor and uses two new engines: a gasoline twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 with 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque or a turbodiesel twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 with 304 hp and 516 pound-feet of torque. A ten-speed automatic transmission and—naturally—four-wheel drive are standard across the board.
The new design doesn't look radically different from the current model, but the front end has a more prominent grille and a snazzier lighting setup, while the rear has new taillights and a reshaped tailgate. Inside, the cabin benefits from a significant upgrade with a large tablet-style infotainment screen and a cleaner dashboard layout. Three rows of seats will be available, and the third row appears to fold into the floor—a change from the current model, which requires you to flip and fold the wayback seats up towards the windows for more cargo capacity.

Overview
The 2022 BMW M4 is just as exciting as its M3 sedan sibling, but only it's available as a coupe or soft-top convertible. Both make our Editors' Choice list. The base hard-top model comes exclusively with rear-wheel drive, a satisfying manual transmission, and a thrilling 473-hp twin-turbo straight-six. The Competition variant gets an enhanced 503-hp engine, a snappy automatic gearbox, and unique chassis tuning that should culminate in quicker lap times at the local racetrack. Only the automatic M4 is available with all-wheel drive, and this slick system features a drift-worthy rear-drive mode. Regardless of the body style or power delivery, the M4 is a hoot to hoon, and its ride is remarkably civil when hunting apexes isn't part of the daily commute. We wish BMW gave it analog gauges instead of indecipherable digital ones, and we'd prefer fewer adjustable drive-mode settings, but overall the 2022 M4 is delightful to drive, and that's what matters.

The Nio ET9 will enter production in China next year, and it offers a 900-volt architecture and charging speeds of up to 600 kW.
Like other Nio products, it will also be able to use battery-swapping stations in China.
It includes steer-by-wire technology and will support higher-level autonomous driving with three LIDAR scanners.
Chinese EV automaker Nio seems no closer to its stated aim to ultimately sell cars in the States, but it is certainly busy in its homeland. The company's latest model, the freshly unveiled ET9 flagship, sits at the top of a range that now consists of nine electric models.
The ET9 is packed with technology, including a 900-volt electrical architecture and steer-by-wire, but it also promises commanding presence. With an overall length of 209.7 inches, it is 0.8 inch longer than the extended-wheelbase version of the Bentley Bentayga, with the Nio sitting on a huge 128 inch wheelbase. Despite its size, the ET9's proportions are those of an extra-large crossover rather than a true SUV—Nio describes it as a "landjet" design—with its 63.8 inch height making it 4.7 inches less tall than the Bentayga.
The ET9 has all-wheel drive through two motors. A smaller 241-hp asynchronous motor is at the front and a 456-hp permanent-magnet synchronous motor is at the rear, producing a total of 697 hp. The 120.0-kWh battery operates at 925 volts and is claimed to support DC fast-charging at up to 600 kW. We don't have any claimed performance numbers, or an overall range yet, but NIO says that under optimal conditions it will be possible to recharge at a rate that will provide up to 158 miles of additional range in just five minutes. Nio also offers automated battery swap stations in China, with these allowing a depleted battery to be replaced with a fully charged one in under five minutes.
The ET9 is the first Nio to use steer-by-wire, a technology set to become increasingly commonplace in coming years. (The Tesla Cybertruck also features it, and we have recently driven Toyota's prototype version.) This has no physical connection between steering wheel and rack, with all inputs - as well as feedback - delivered electrically, with redundancy in the event of power failure. Nio has previously announced a technical collaboration with supplier ZF Group on steer-by-wire, leading us to assume that supplier has built the ET9's system. The ET9 also has rear-wheel steering and an active suspension featuring height-adjustable air springs.
As with other high-end Chinese market cars, the ET9 has clearly been designed around the priorities of rear-seat passengers. The back takes clear inspiration from private jets, with two reclinable seats and an aircraft-style tray table. The rear seats offer up to 45 degrees of recline with no fewer than 11 motorized shades to darken the cabin at the touch of a button, plus a noise-cancellation system.
Occupants will also have an abundance of digital displays, with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen in the dashboard and 14.6-inch displays hung from the front seats for each rear occupant, plus a smaller 8.0-inch control screen between the back seats.
The ET9 will support higher-level assisted driving with no fewer than three LIDAR arrays, one looking forward and one monitoring each side. The computing power to run such systems comes from what is claimed to be the world's first 5 nanometer automotive-grade chip, the Shenji NX9031—a statistic that ET9 owners can doubtless use to impress their friends.
The ET9 is available for preorder in China, with deliveries set to begin in the first quarter of 2025. Prices start at around $112,000 at current exchange rates.

Overview
The 2024 BMW XM SUV is on an ambitious mission to target the pinnacles of performance and luxury simultaneously. Behind its overwrought snout lies a twin-turbocharged V-8 that's enhanced by a plug-in hybrid system, which combine to produce up to 738 horsepower. The result is a rocket, capable of hitting 60 mph in as little as 3.7 seconds. It can also motor itself around on electric power alone if you only need to run a few errands. And you might just choose the XM for such tasks since its cabin is richly trimmed, comfortable, and spacious. BMW has added all of its most desirable tech features too, including a curved dashboard display and the latest driver-assistance systems. While it's quick in a straight line, the XM isn't as joyful to drive as the company's vaunted M3 and M5 sports sedans. But if corner-carving isn't on your driving menu, the XM's got panache and power out the wazoo and we'll be damned if we can find fault with that.
What's New for 2024?
An even more powerful Label model joins the lineup for 2024 and boasts a 738-hp variant of the XM's plug-in-hybrid powertrain. BMW says the extra power is enough to launch the XM Label to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, which is likely conservative since we've already proved the "regular" 644-hp XM can do that in 3.4. The Label will command a hefty premium over the base model, but pricing confirmation should arrive just before the Label hits dealers at the end of 2023.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
A twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 isn't new to the BMW powertrain portfolio but in the XM it's partnered with an electric motor and a battery pack to create a whopping 644 horsepower. During our first test drive, we noted the powertrain's immediate punch and estimated that it should get the XM to 60 mph in about 3.8 seconds, but when we got it on our home turf for testing, it surprised us with a 3.4-second leap to 60 mph. That puts the XM at a disadvantage—albeit only a slight one—when compared to other performance SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, both of which delivered zero-to-60-mph times of 3.2 seconds in our testing. The XM uses a coil-spring suspension system that's augmented by adaptive dampers and active anti-roll bars. The result isn't as compliant and composed as it would be had BMW chosen to offer an air suspension, but in the Comfort driving mode, the ride is far from punishing. When set to Sport, the XM's handling is responsive and eager which makes it good fun on a twisty road.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
The XM's 25.7-kWh battery pack is said to be good for about 30 miles of electric-only range per charge, and we managed to get close in our testing with a result of 29 miles. BMW says the XM's onboard charger is capable of juicing the battery at up to 7.4 kW and should be able to charge up to 100 percent in a little over three hours.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA says the XM is good for only 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway despite its status as a plug-in hybrid. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, the XM bested its EPA estimate by returning 20 mpg when going solely by its gasoline engine; when factoring in the 29 miles or so we drove on electric power its result is an even more palatable 49 MPGe.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Everything about the XM's cabin is high-end, including its optional vintage-look leather upholstery that was first shown on the concept car. The XM's cabin is strictly a two-row affair, and in place of a large panoramic sunroof, the XM can be had with a geometric-patterned faux-suede headliner that features fiber-optic lighting that's used to dramatic effect. An optional audio upgrade adds a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with tweeters that illuminate.
Infotainment and Connectivity
A large, curved display stretches across two-thirds of the dashboard. The display serves as both a digital gauge cluster as well as an on-board infotainment center, and It runs BMW's latest iDrive 8.5 software interface. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and additional features such as SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a premium stereo system are included as well.
