...explosante-fixe... (...exploding-fixed...) is a piece of music composed by Pierre Boulez. Initially conceived in 1971 as a memorial for Igor Stravinsky, who died in April of that year, Boulez composed several different versions of the work between 1972 and 1993, culminating in a piece for solo MIDI-flute and chamber orchestra. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...explosante-fixe...

Franz Liszt - Trois Odes Funèbres, for orchestra (1860-66)
Rudfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin
Conductor - Karl Anton Rickenbacher
Liszt’s Trois Odes funèbres were composed between 1860 and 1866, and exist in a variety of versions: for orchestra, for piano solo and for piano duet. There is also a chorus in the first Ode and the possibility of a narrator in the first and second. The first is also an organ piece, with the title Trauerode, and La notte also exists for violin and piano. The third of the Odes is also entitled ‘Epilogue to the Symphonic Poem: Tasso, Lamento e Trionfo’, and in its orchestral version it enjoyed a certain vogue towards the end of the nineteenth century, especially when conducted by its dedicatee Leopold Damrosch. Although it is quite clear from the original manuscripts that Liszt intended these works to be performed as a cycle, they have never been published together and have rarely been performed as he wished.

Alexander Lokshin - Symphony No. 5, 'Shakespeare's Sonnets', for baritone, string orchestra and harp (1969)
Dedicated to Rudolf Barshai
Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra
Conductor - Rudolf Barshai
Baritone - Thomas Allen
I. Sonnet 66 ("Tired with all these, for restful death I cry") - 0:00
II. Sonnet 73 ("That time of year thou mayst in me behold") - 6:14
The short two-movement Symphony No. 5 (1969) is based on Shakespeare’s Sonnets 66 (Tired with all these, for restful death I cry) and 73 (That time of year thou mayst in me behold). These are sung as translated into Russian by Boris Pasternak. The words are not reproduced in any form in the booklet. The English version will be easily accessible on the internet; not so the transliterated Russian original which is sung here by Yan Kratov. Sonnet 66 is a viciously vituperative setting where resentment is plied under pressure. Sonnet 73 is for the most part a more restrained and even romantic affair - impressive in its quieter virtues and tender understatement. The harp is most artfully employed, making small gestures that add half-lit, humane and yielding dimensions.

Luciano Berio - Chemins IV su Sequenza VII, for oboe and 11 strings (1975)
Ensemble Intercontemporain
Conductor - Pierre Boulez
Oboe - László Hadady
"Chemins IV, for oboe and eleven strings, can be listened to as a commentary to my Sequenza VII for oboe (1969), a commentary that amplifies and develops certain harmonic aspects of the original Sequenza. The Sequenza becomes in fact the generator of new instrumental lines, which in turn make explicit its latent polyphony around a pivot - an ever-present B - that puts into perspective all the subsequent harmonic transformations. Like a reverberating chamber, the development of Chemins IV mirrors and shatters the elements of Sequenza VII, sometimes receiving their anticipated echo in such a way that for the listener the oboe part seems generated by the eleven strings."

Pierre Boulez - Rituel in Memoriam Bruno Maderna, for 8 orchestral groups (1974-75)
Dedicated to Bruno Maderna (1920 - 1973)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Conductor - Pierre Boulez
Rituel, commissioned by BBC London, was written a year after the death of Boulez's friend and fellow composer/conductor Bruno Maderna in December 1973. It was first performed in London on 2 April 1975 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Boulez. Following the premiere, Boulez revised the score, removing optional, "open" features due to concerns regarding the ability of a large ensemble to react in a coordinated way to unpredictable situations. Gunther Schuller conducted the Berkshire Music Center Orchestra, a student ensemble, in the U.S. premiere of Rituel on 14 August 1975 as part of the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music.
The musical material of Rituel was derived from ...explosante-fixe..., a two-page tribute to Igor Stravinsky, described by Goldman as "a kind of open-ended composition kit", that Boulez composed for a 1972 issue of the journal Tempo. Over the course of roughly twenty years, Boulez would base a number of compositions, including Anthèmes I and II, on this material.
