Acemoglu and Robinson have written a book that details what they consider the origins of prosperity and poverty - based upon how political and economic power operates in the nation. What works and what doesn't. I encourage everyone to read this book and take it seriously in light of recent SCOTUS decisions that will hollow out our federal government - having learned nothing from the failure of the Continental Congress nor the Civil War both of which were due, in large part, to the states ignoring the federal government. As ye sow, so shall ye reap, y'all. Well worth reading and available everywhere in all formats.
William Allingham was an Irish poet who is best known for his diaries wherein he wrote rather revealing portraits of various artists of the earlier Victorian period including Tennyson and Carlyle. Allingham's work heavily influenced Yeats and John Hewitt with his lyrical poetry while Allingham's essays were instrumental in starting the Celtic Revival movement.
Textile magnate Lord Carlton is dying and has a change of heart "Find my nephew," he tells his not terribly successful lawyer Ambrose Quince, "and make him my heir." And the hunt is on...but there's a twist, fraud and murder to get through before we discover the truth. One of Patricia Moyes' Inspector TIbbet series.
Beryl Markham could have had an ordinary English Edwardian life but as a child she was running barefoot with the Nandi learning how to hunt in what is now Kenya in Africa on her expatriate father's farm and racing stable. He left for Peru and she took over training racehorses. Wise Child won the Nairobi St. Leger when Beryl was 18. Now, a Memsahib she took to the air, flying hunters, mail, carrying supplies and spotting elephants for those in mining camps and bush camps. Discarding convention, as well as lovers and husbands, as she went - she lived an extraordinary life because for her "life had to move or it stagnates". Africa alone claimed her heart. Her books of stories express an enraptured joy and wonder - as if she were that barefoot child still running through the tall grass. Her work is a lyrical expression of an adventurous life well and truly lived. I think you will quite like reading all about it.

How have you been getting on with the reading list? Not done yet? No doubt you have been busy with other things. Never mind, you still have time. Focus upon the three I heartily recommend as being fascinating and fun!
From Henry II in 1154 to Richard III in 1485, England was ruled by The Plantagenets. After the Anarchy when Empress Matilda fought with Stephen de Bois for the throne, England mostly settled down and 'made do' with the kings they got from this hot-tempered family and grasping family. But fear not for the Magna Carta was signed and Parliament began. Don Jones is a competent historian perhaps a bit too tolerant? A book worth reading, and it is available for not a lot of money from almost everywhere.
