Thousands of Italians sign-up against Zelensky speech.
A petition against Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's scheduled speech at a singing competition akin to Eurovision has been signed by tens of thousands of Italians. Matteo Salvini, the deputy prime minister, told journalists that the festival "should remain the festival of Italian song and nothing else."

According to Reuters, the petition, which accuses NATO and Kiev of "brutally repressing" Russian speakers in the Donbass, has gathered about 33,000 signatures.

The petition asks the Sanremo Music Festival's organizers to revoke Zelensky's invitation to speak via video link on the contest's final night, February 11, at the annual Eurovision-style competition.

"Zelensky? I have no idea how he sings," Salvini told reporters on Thursday. "I won't listen to anything else if I have time to watch state television, just to see music."

Salvini stated that the stage at Sanremo should "stay reserved for music," even though he favors the "Western viewpoint" on the dispute.

The Italian newspaper Il Post stated that former congressman Alessandro Di Battista is planning a "counter-festival" to oppose Zelensky's appearance, and that Gianni Cuperlo of the center-left Democratic Party advised the Sanremo festival organizers not to "confuse" politics with leisure.

Zelensky has been on a PR crusade in the West for the past 11 months, during which Russia's military campaign in Ukraine has been ongoing. The former actor and comedian spoke via video link from Kiev at the Glastonbury music festival in the UK, the Cannes and Venice film festivals, and earlier this month at the Golden Globes.

According to Il Post, Zelensky himself asked for permission to speak at Sanremo.

Italy has less support for Zelensky and NATO's actions in Ukraine than the majority of Western European nations. A study conducted earlier this month found that 50% of Italians are against their country's arming of Kiev, while a similar percentage is in favor of a speedy resolution to the crisis, even if it means Ukraine giving up lost territory.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has nonetheless vowed to support the Ukrainian cause "fully."
