Birth Ritual, a classic Soundgarden song, is one of my favorites from the 90s "Grunge" era (and the best era, I might add). Chris Cornell is a god on vocals and his best singing was done during the 90s and this song tested his particular technique. So, on day 241, I chose this tune and did things a little different. I made two takes and left them both in the video, not for a choice to be made, but for you to understand my "preferred" decision.
Video 1 has me "singing pretty". For the majority of the song, the singer (if male) is in head voice, only dipping into the mix for a brief period. The "ritual" part has me at a C# to an D# (I like "Eb", as it sounds "higher" *chuckle*). Not too shabby for a Tenor, I must say. Singing in this area, especially for Birth Ritual, a performer has to be mindful of technique if he is going to survive this song, not to mention a set. Video 1 does have me doing the technique "right", but the emotion of the song is lost, at least for me.
Video 2 is my choice, only because the emotional "raw" idea is manifest in how I approached the "ritual" portion of the piece. This song is not meant to be "pretty"; it's talking about something quite ugly and raw in and of itself. As a side note, technique is how I did what I did. Anyone not up on what to do on the tip-top notes can damage the vocal folds, so,...don't try this at home.
Lying like needles on forest earth
Euphoric rush trees bend to pray for us
I'm sputtering like cold machines
Late for the birth ritual, ritual, ritual, ritual
You can drive my tail to watch the circus
A birth ritual, a birth of idiots
Now I woke up blessed and good strives for heartache
Marked for the death ritual, ritual, ritual
As you start the song and face this garden
I light a cigarette before the execution
Now you see your crime for every miracle
Add another drug at every birth ritual
I took the drug to make me stay
And now everything dies in shyness
The snake retreats admits defeat
And waits for the birth ritual, ritual, ritual
As you start the song and face this garden
I light a cigarette before the execution
Now you see your crime for every miracle
Add another drug at every birth ritual
Shining light child's highs
Mark his sides bright until the newness wears off
As you start the song and face this garden
I light a cigarette before the execution
Now you see your crime for every miracle
Add another drug at every birth ritual

Back in 2008, I started my song writing again through a long absense. Throughout my life, I've been influenced by a great number of people and sometimes those ideas can leak into my songwritting. When I was finished with my first song, I read the lyrcis to my then fienace, my very honest fieance. When I was finished, she looked at me, smiled, a polite smile, and didn't say anything. Now, as a songwriter, you know what that means,..the song was just "ok". What I had done is wrote someone else's song and not my own, so I scrapped it and came up with this one, my song.
This is about, well me, before I was saved and the life I led and the eventual end if I didn't come to Jesus.
Two Steps Back Lyrics
Four measure intro
Verse
Storm clouds commin' while I salt the earth
There's blisters on my hands
These lines on my face, they lead to a place
To a dry and barron land
And a raven is perched atop my door
But he doesn't say a word
Nothing is spoken, nothing is said
Nothing, but the work
Chorus:
Like a hammer to my hands
Like rocks on my back
And the iron on my feet
This bitter life I'm tastin'
and this road that was taken
One step forward, two steps back, then three
4 measure break
Verse
Three score and ten, not that long ago
I was a different man
Two roads diverged in a long forgotten wood
and I took the third
This once smooth skin of a now callused heart
Has poisoned a furtil field
I now curl up in a tall mans bed
And my blanket is the earth
Chorus:
Like a hammer to my hands
Like rocks on my back
And the iron on my feet
This bitter life I'm tastin'
and this road that was taken
One step forward, two steps back, then three
4 measure break
Verse
Storm clouds are here while I still salt the earth
The curse that is my strife
More lines on my face, that lead to a place
To a dry and barron life
And a raven is still perched atop my door
But now, he turns to speak
"Your life has been wasted, time has run out
Three words you didn’t speak"
Chorus:
Like a hammer to my hands
Like rocks on my back
And the iron on my feet
This bitter life I'm tastin'
and this road that was taken
One step forward, two steps back, then three

When we die, will we recognize those we loved in Heaven? The Bible gives many verses that confirm "yes," we will recognize our loved ones after death.
Scripture reading:
“When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they said, “He is dead.” So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate. Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” And he said, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who can tell whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.””

Christians, I know it will be hard to do, but we - right now - need to drop Trump and all conspiracy related topics from our conversations and stick to things pertaining to the Bible (Gospel, prophecy, etc.). We’re nearing the end, and we can’t let our testimonies be ruined by adding Q’Anon garbage to prophecy, Trump’s election to Christ, or anything like that.
To be sure, we can talk about other stuff, but it’s the conspiracy trash I’m talking about.
The Devil knows his time is short. Don’t let him add ink to the water of life, which is Christ Jesus (water of life), that all of us should speak now in these end times.

The Natural Artistry of Singing is a method of teaching voice that allows the student to have a natural and effortless technique which gives them better range, power, the ability to sing virtually any style of music and gives them the confidence to sing like a pro. This method also gives the student the tools to create the mindset of a professional, which gives them confidence in any situation.
View all the videos and learn the philosophy/exercises in The Natural Artistry of Singing: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQUT03U6m4_DJcent1ughXyH7LNa1BCKj
The four foundations of this method are:
Technique:
Through the application of correct technique, the student can sing virtually any style of music. The Natural Artistry of Singing Method does not teach a student to mimic a style but to incorporate core fundamentals. These fundamentals are best learned in "immersion" lessons, thus establishing the technique quickly.
Artistry:
Being a "mechanically correct" singer is one thing, but capturing the attention of your audience as well as delivering a memorable performance is the goal of every singer. The Natural Artistry of Singing method goes over key techniques to find the songs "meaning", how to make the music your own and most importantly, how to deliver that message to your audience.
Mind:
It all starts with the mind and the creation of a new "vocal identity". The Natural Artistry of Singing method establishes a new paradigm (core idea) of what "singing" is meant to be. This new core idea moves the student quickly through technique, learning new materials, establishing peak performance and gives him/her the confidence found in great performers.
Body:
The human voice is unique among instruments as it is the only one that is truly a part of "you". Overall health is addressed so the singer can be at his / her peak 100% of the time. The Natural Artistry of Singing method is not about losing weight to be a better performer but being a physically healthy singer.

I will admit, today was the hardest day to sing under the overpass. The only time I had to do this was in the evening straight after work. The morning time just couldn't happen and lunch,..forget about it, so, after 5 p.m. was it.
It was a challenge for me, not from the standpoint of avoiding traffic, but from the area of my perfectionism. To have a creative soul, I must embrace the ability to "plow through" the imperfections in life and create. I could have stopped, I could have gotten up close to midnight and recorded, but I chose to finish what I started, get through all the crappy traffic and finish strong.
