Sun Tone - Sun Tone (EP) | Color Red Music
Sun Tone started as random musings on a laptop from Ryan Gambrell. Taking notes from classic hip hop producers, Gambrell began shaping his own sound with jazz guitar melodies, funky bass lines, and soulful organ pads on top of boom-bap beats. The project’s debut EP finds Gambrell calling upon his arsenal of collaborators in former reggae and afrobeat projects to help him bring his musings to life. As a producer, Gambrell has worked with fellow Color Red artists Sydney, Australia’s black bird hum mixing their latest release “My Side” and producing a b-side dub. He also tracked ATOMGA’s 2014 debut EP. His bloodlines in both performance and production work are displayed in Sun Tone. The collection of songs draws in influences ranging from mellow instrumental psychedelic acts like Khruangbin and El Michaels Affairs as well as lush guitar work along the lineage of Grant Green and George Benson. The end result is a distinct blend of cinematic soul music.

“Corpus Callosum” by Polyrhythmics is an aural reflection of the nerve fiber bundle that connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Trumpeter Scott Morning wanted to capture the concept of extreme mood swings and illustrate two disparate emotional sensations. The A section is funky, angular, and energetic while the B section is sensual, groovy, and mildly psychedelic. The track is off of the band’s record ‘Man from the Future’ released on Color Red in May 2020.

WRD emulates the rush of adrenaline that comes from a marathon week of gigs during New Orleans’ Jazz Fest in “Sleep Depraved.” Organist Robert Walter reflects on how music tends to get dirtier and more immediate in the extreme conditions from two weeks of late night gigs where the joy of music overrides exhaustion. The track is heavily influenced by mid-70s jazz-funk artists like Roy Ayers and Donald Byrd and Grant Green’s album ‘Live at the Lighthouse,’ carrying the same fervor as the ironic album, but with organ trio instrumentation. “Sleep Depraved” was recorded during a 1-day session at Color Red Studios in Denver, CO where the band worked swiftly to talk down arrangements and roll the tape. The track encapsulates the group’s chemistry and high-level artistry while prefacing a full-length album produced by Roberts that will come out in 2021.

Side B from the vinyl 45. The White Blinds bring their "homage" to this Rusty Bryant classic. Rolling the tempo back a notch, Duffy and Frank set the stage holding it down for Hornbeck’s swampy guitar melody. The tone is further set for Frank’s organ solo which he blazes in classic White Blinds fashion and just when you think it’s coming back to the melody, we are dropped into a solid open drum solo with Michael Duffy fanning the flames to bring us all the way home.

“Your Love is Like Water” is a soul-drenched collaboration between Josh Hoyer & The Macy Sounds. In fall 2018, Macy Sounds formed in Color Red Studios as a collaboration between John Macy on pedal steel guitar and Eddie Roberts, Pete Shand, and Joe Tatton of The New Mastersounds with Jeff Franca of Thievery Corporation on drums. With a solid track peppered with asserted riffs and slick guitar work, Eddie Roberts called upon Hoyer to add his Bill Withers-esque vocals. The lyrics used in “Your Love is Like Water” had been looking for a home for awhile, so it was simpatico that they laid well over The Macy Sounds' Meters-like funk groundwork. This is the first track in a three-song series on Color Red with a follow up session with Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal to follow in May 2019.

“Tou Tou Rendezvous” by Mo’ Gigs tells the tale of love budding over a gradual period of time in a 60s-inspired boogaloo with traces of R&B and acid jazz. The song was built upon the piano motif as the band collaborated and added elements of hip-hop and 60s French pop culture aesthetics to capture the story of a feeling that is unfancy, but intimate at the same time. It is based on a true story of how vocalist Csaba Gál met his wife and features call-and-response sections with fellow vocalist Sarolta Szécsi.

Mathis notes that “Moonlight Sonata” is one of the most iconic chord progressions in history. It was the direct inspiration behind classics ranging from The Beatles’ “Because” to Radiohead’s “Exit Music For a Film” and countless other haunting melodies in modern times. The fourth track on the Color Red series will be followed up by additional releases and will culminate in a full-length album to be released later in 2019.
