The Benefits of Shooting Video in Log
Let's discuss the benefits of shooting video in a log format. I personally love shooting in S-Log and getting that extra boost of dynamic range that I wouldn't normally get shooting from a standard picture profile. Log gives you so much more flexibility in post-processing to fine tune the image exactly the way you want.

If you want to jump directly to the point, a Log format extends a camera's dynamic range by pulling down the highlights and raising the shadows allowing more information to be captured. Log is a RAW signal although not necessarily a RAW format/codec which means you must color grade the footage to bring it back to Rec.709 (standard display) or Rec.2020 (HDR) standards. I used Rec.709 as an example when talking about the color spectrum. When you shoot in a Log format, you can capture a wider variety of colors that are technically outside of the Rec.709's latitude resulting in more color information as well.
