Tax Day Reprieve On The Road of Excess
April 15th typically represents one of the most dreaded deadlines in American culture. If the only certainties in life are death and taxes, does the pandemic excused delay of the latter ensure the rapid approach of the former? The nature of American culture has always been open to debate, but who can even begin to define that which is, and has always been, the melting pot of civilization. Perhaps this experimental confluence of human experience is on the brink of collapse, but then again, who is to say that our perception of events is even remotely accurate?
Hypatia gave her life in an ill-fated and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to save the library in Alexandria. Is the search for objective truth equally doomed?
Plato once said: “It is the task of the enlightened not only to ascend to learning and to see the good but to be willing to descend again to those prisoners and to share their troubles and their honors, whether they are worth having or not. And this they must do, even with the prospect of death.”
Perhaps this is why we were once reminded by the infamous James Douglass Morrison: “Death makes angels of us all, and gives us wings where we were smooth as raven’s claws”.
If the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom, as William Blake once said, it seems as though we are standing on the precipice of a great awakening.
