Within Temptation is a musical band formed in Waddinxveen (South Netherlands) in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. Their music is described as Symphonic Metal, may be as Symphonic Rock genre with various influences, although their first albums like -Enter- are categorized Gothic Metal. Sharon Janny den Adel, a.k.a. Sharon den Adel was born on 12 July 1974 in Waddinxveen. She's a singer (mezzo-soprano range) and composer, known as co-founder and lead vocalist and one of the main songwriters of the band. Sharon has a bachelor's degree in fashion design and uses her expertise by designing her stage costumes and the band's merchandises. She is also long-term partner Robert Westerholt she met during her high school and they have 3 children together (Eva Luna, Robin Aiden and Logan Arwin). Robert Westerholt, was born on 2 January 1975, also in Waddinxveen. He's is a musician, music composer, rhythm guitar, since 1996 (but only in the studio since 2011) backing vocalist and co-founder of WITHIN TEMPTATION with Sharon and Martijn Westerholt his brother (also songwriter, keyboardist and co-founder of the Dutch band DELAIN). After leaving their former band -The Circle- which was then renamed in -Voyage- before disbanding, Robert and Sharon den Adel, decided in 1996 to form a new band called -The Portal-, including former The Circle band members Jeroen van Veen (born on 26 October 1974) on bass guitar, as well as Martijn Westerholt on keyboards. A few times later the band name become -WITHIN TEMPTATION- before their debut recording. The actual members are : Sharon den Adel - Robert Westerholt - Jeroen van Veen + Ruud Jolie (born Rudolf Adrianus Jolie on 19 April 1976) lead guitar and rhythm guitar since 2001 - Martijn Spierenburg (born on 30 January 1975), composer, arranger and keyboards since 2001 - Mike Coolen - drummer since 2011 - Stefan Helleblad - rhythm guitar, lead guitar, since 2011 (during tours). From their humble beginnings, nearly 25 years ago Within Temptation has sold over 4 million CDs and DVDs world-wide, making them not only Holland’s biggest selling musical export but also one of the biggest rock acts internationally. They have won 42 Gold & Platinum Awards around the world.
