Status Coup's Louis DeAngelis reports on our investigate report that reveals the EPA is now backtracking away from Norfolk Southern's claim that it performed a so-called "controlled burn" of five train cars of highly toxic and carcinogenic Vinyl Chloride in East Palestine on February 6th (Vinyl Chloride is linked to rare forms of liver cancer as well as lung cancer, miscarriage, and neurological problems. “We aren’t currently in the position to provide a legal conclusion responsive to your inquiry,” an EPA spokesperson told Status Coup when asked directly if the process the railroad company carried out was an open burn detonation—which was banned by the EPA in 1980. The refusal to answer is a stark departure for the agency, which has mimicked Norfolk Southern's claim of a "controlled burn." A source tells Status Coup "everybody is lawyering up" at the EPA and elsewhere.
