Today I review the Shure Beta 57a, a supercardioid version of the classic SM57. The main difference between this and the 57 is the polar pattern, and will do a better job at background noise rejection. There are also tonal differences, with a slightly more aggressive low cut, and less boosted treble and air frequencies. If you want the classic 57 sound with minor tonal differences and better noise rejection, this is an essential mic.

Today we’re looking at a stage dynamic vocal microphone, the Electro Voice ND76. This is an alternative to the SM58, which offers more clarity and detail due to an 8dB boost around 6kHz, and also does a great job at rejecting handling noise and off-axis rejection, however, it doesn’t do the best at rejecting plosives.

Today I review the RE20’s little brother, the RE320. This is a Broadcast Dynamic Mic that is a great option if the RE20 or SM7B are out of your budget. It has a great tone for spoken word, does great at off axis & rear rejection, and doesn’t suffer from a boomy proximity effect.

Today I review the Zoom ZDM-1 Budget Podcasting Microphone. This kit has a dynamic mic, headphones, XLR cable, mic stand, and windscreen. The microphone has a clear sound with a fairly controlled low end which can get a touch wooly in the low mids if you get too close. It also suffers from plosives and shocks, but does a great job at background noise rejection. All round for $120 the mic sounds pretty great.
I also compare it to the SM58, sE V7, Rode Podmic, MXL BCD-1, Sontronics Podcast Pro, Shure SM7b, and Electro Voice RE20

oday we look at the a brand new microphone from Shure; the KSM8 Dualdyne Dual Diaphragm Handheld Dynamic Vocal Microphone…that’s a mouth full. This thing use 2 diaphragms to assist in reducing proximity effect and improve off axis rejection. It has a much more neutral frequency response compared to the SM58, and provides a smooth and articulate tone with a full low-end without introducing any muddiness.

Today I review a budget mic, the Presonus M7. This offers a rolled off low end, a forward mid section and a somewhat dull air region. I don't think this mic sounds particularly good on any sound source, and I don't recommend it as a stand alone purchase, but if you're getting it as a part of a kit you can make it work.

Today I walkthrough, explain, test and review the Audient ID14 MKII. This is a USB-C bus powered audio interface which is expandable to 10 inputs via ADAT/SPDIF, with 2 amazing internal preamps and a great sounding instrument input. MKII improves the A/D conversion dynamic range by 5dB, and D/A conversions dynamic range by 9dB. The headphone is capable of driving even the HD650’s cleanly and it records up to 24-bit 96kHz.
