In this round-up of the week, Extinction Rebellion protests against damage to the environment by damaging the environment. A study suggests that the contribution to methane levels from fossil fuels is higher than previously thought, and the US Republican’s climate plan gets pushback from some of its own people as the latest Democrat candidates debate makes a Trump second term more likely.

Climate scientist Patrick Brown just published an article in the prestigious journal Nature - and then caused a sensation by saying he had tailored that paper to be in line with the "narrative" that top journals expect on climate change - one of alarmism regardless of the facts. Some have jumped on the claims as vindication of what they've always said, others have called him any number of unflattering names. What's the truth? Is this a big deal that will echo through the coming decade, or a minor squall to pass imminently without leaving an impression? Let's have a look.

Russia turns off the gas supply, and Europe’s fear it won’t be turned back on has far reaching impacts. President Biden goes to deal with people he labelled as pariahs even as America’s own bad behaviour is brought to attention. The UK conservative party fights like ferrets in a sack over who will be the next Prime Minister. And in this week’s short thought, I dream of an end to safetyism in a country braced in terror over a coming heat wave.

We have seen terrible awful scenes from the Beirut explosion. The strong assumption in the media is this was an accident caused by routine corruption and incompetence. That is absolutely feasible. According to some on the ground, the majority of Lebanese assume this was an attack on a weapons store of Hezbollah’s. That is also absolutely feasible.
Let’s take a look at what we think we know, and what are the key questions that really need to be answered.

And, in case you hadn’t noticed, someone went and called a general election. I give a floating voter’s reflections on what will happen, and we look at whether this will be the climate change election.

Vlog of my pre-Christmas trip to Birmingham, to meet with social entrepreneurs Melody Hossaini (CEO of InspirEngage International and former contestant on The Apprentice) and, separately, Ravinol Chambers (CEO of the award-winning Be Inspired Films).
I talked with both about why they had decided they should create a social enterprise rather than simply going for the straight business option.

He's spoken to Vladimir Putin five times since the war started - but this was the first time he picked up the phone to Ukraine's Volodymir Zelensky. What does the call say about China's intended role in the Ukraine war - why might it signal hope for an end to the conflict - or, depending on your perspective - provoke fear in how China might use that end to its own advantage?

COP26 is almost finished – what did it actually achieve? The UK and the US have declining covid cases but are contemplating vaccine mandates anyway. And Chinese premier Xi Jinping takes another step towards becoming ruler for life.

In recent months there has been a big focus in the US on this thing called critical race theory. And especially about whether it is being taught – and whether it should be taught – in schools. And the same debate is emerging similarly in the UK. What’s it all about? And is it really a problem?

The EU has been in some disarray in recent weeks over its plans to ban internal combustion engine cars by 2035. This week – a decision was finally made, although it settles less than you might think, and it marks the spot where the whole net zero project could founder. Let's discuss.
