CONTEXT: On the morning of January 29, 2022, John O'Keefe's body was found on a snow plow in front of the home of fellow police officer Brian Albert. The night before, he had gone to a bar with his girlfriend, Karen Read, as well as some friends and acquaintances, including Brian. Not long after, Karen was charged with John's murder, but her defense alleges that she is being framed by the group of people who met up at Brian's home after the bar closed. Trial begins Tuesday, April 16, 2024 with jury selection. We're going live to give commentary on a Stand Your Ground Hearing in the so-called "Black Swan Murder Trial." Ashley Benefield, a former ballerina and swimsuit model, is accused of murdering her husband in their Florida bedroom on September 27, 2020 (he was reportedly shot four times). In 2016, Douglas Benefield and Ashley Benefield (formerly Ashley Byers, who is apparently half Douglas' age) met in Charleston, South Carolina for the first time. They married 13 days later. Douglas had been widowed just months before he and Ashley met. His prior wife died of a heart condition. Douglas and his deceased wife shared a daughter, Eva, who appears to be in her 20s now. Ashley quickly became pregnant and then moved to Florida to live with her mother. Douglas joined later. According to police, once she learned she was pregnant, she quickly started making allegations against Douglas (she claimed he kept poisoning her with heavy metals while pregnant), and she followed up with complaints filed against him. However, at one of their final injunction hearings, the judge said she did not find Ashley's story to have "a scintilla of truth" (a chincilla of truth!) and ordered Douglas to have access to their child for visitation. This hearing is on whether the defendant is entitled to immunity under Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law." The burden is on the State to show (with clear and convincing evidence) that she is not entitled to this immunity. Day 18 saw a TON of witnesses cycled through. We started the day by finishing the video deposition of Raquel Pennington. Follow that we heard from her ex husband Josh Drew. Moving on from Josh we heard from Whitney Henriquez, our only in person witness of the day, and also Amber's sister. Follow Whitney we moved onto Elizabeth Marz, and friend of Amber and Johnny. Next up was Melanie Inglessis, Amber's makeup artist. Rounding out the day we finished up with Kristy Sexton, Amber's acting coach. On the whole, there was some good testimony for Amber today. Was it fatal for Johnnie's case?
