Since the Fed remains the buyer of last resort for Treasuries, their stepping away from the table is causing risk assets to sell off sharply, in addition to causing cracks to form in the debt markets, including Treasuries, which have been seeing recent liquidity problems. Now that sovereign immunity is gone for central banks holding Treasuries, we will see far fewer sovereign purchases of Treasuries, and the Fed will need to return to buying. Until the Fed returns in an overt or covert manner, risk assets will continue to sell off, and we are at risk of a true financial crisis.
