#204 - Setting up a Dante audio network can be very simple. You may only be plugging in a single device, or you could be connecting up an entire campus. Either way, there are a number of reasons you may need to go beyond un-managed switches in any network. No matter what you’re using the network for, this often comes with some unwanted noise. Thankfully, we can hack our network hardware with help from Noctua to cut down on the annoyance. In this video we're modifying the Cisco SG300 with a set of Noctua 12V PWM fans that have a dramatic affect on the unit's noise pollution.
Let us know if you've swapped out the fans in any of your gear & how it worked out.

In this video we're taking a quick moment to look at what you need to do to check and update the firmware in your Dante devices. While many devices do take advantage of the built in update tools in controller, we also talk about the growing number of individual pieces of software required from manufacturers to work with various new Dante products. How do you feel about needing specific software to adjust basic parameters on devices across a network? Should @Audinate step in and make certain features addressable in controller in the same way you are able to adjust things like the output level of their Avio adapters so easily?
Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!

We've got the Midas DM16 analog mixing board in for a first look & review this week. I'm calling this one a bit of both, since I've used this series of mixers in real life work with some regularity a few years back. A client replaced a small rack mixer with a DM12 & I had the opportunity to work with it for a number of live events, performances and speeches. So more than usual, I feel comfortable offering some real world observations I made at that time.

A quick look at SoundSource by Rogue Amoeba and how mac users can benefit from more control over the audio on their system. Go beyond one interface & redirect apps directly to the outputs you need to use. There's even a free trial so you can check it out on your system before spending any more. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
We have no affiliation at all here, no affiliate links or incentive to recommend SoundSource. We paid full price for this software & if you've got an alternative way to get this same functionality, it would be great to hear from you.

We're back with Part 2 of our talk with John Huntington.
Like it or not, networking is here to stay in professional audio & production. While it might have you tearing your hair out at the moment, it really is making a massive difference in how we deal with transporting & managing data on a job site. While we grew up hunting down signal flow problems with a mini-mag light as our preferred analysis tool, these days it’s tools like Dante Controller, Wireshark, Wireless Workbench & a solid ethernet dongle for your laptop that get you out of most jams.
Enter John Huntington, educator, author, practitioner, storm chaser, photographer & all around nice gut to spend a Sunday chatting with.
As networked audio has come into its own in the past few years, the knowledge base he has amassed in building reliable show networks and control systems is an excellent foundation to build from and a must have reference on everyone’s shelf in my opinion.
