Silencers Are Normal. NOT [just] for Assassins. Suppressors have great everyday uses...
In this short video we explore a normal, everyday use for a firearms suppressor (silencer... "can"). I wanted to show that normal people use suppressors for everyday purposes. They aren't only for assassins. So I did a few normal things with mine. Like this one: pest control while relaxing in the forest. Don't mind the nitrile gloves. That's also normal.

Okay, so the video is a tongue-in-cheek joke! BUT...

These important safety devices allow you to shoot without damaging your hearing, and they allow shooting without causing noise pollution. In fact, they are *mandatory* in much of Europe. In the U.S., we require a thorough Federal background check complete with fingerprinting and photographs that go along with the application, plus a $200 tax payment in order to get a suppressor (repeat the process & the payment for each and every suppressor purchase). It currently takes about 9 months from the time you submit your paperwork and payment to the time when the ATF (BATFE) sends back the completed paperwork and tax stamp.

All this to regulate an item that is hardly ever used in crimes and, back in 1934 when the law was passed that implemented this regulation, was mostly (apparently) used by poachers. Most silencer-related crime is prosecutions for unlicensed silencers (including 25-year Federal prison sentences for sticking a potato on the end of a rifle barrel). Actual, licensed ones have almost never, ever been used in the commission of a crime (http://wcr.sonoma.edu/v08n2/44.clark/clark.pdf). Anyway...

The whole idea that the only reason somebody would want a suppressor is to commit crime and be an assassin is a complete Hollywood fabrication. As meaningful and effective safety devices, silencers should be deregulated or at least be taken off of the NFA restrictions (National Firearms Act of 1934). The convenience and safety factor of a device that lowers the volume level of a firearm and also reduces the muzzle blast, flash, and the gun's recoil is hard to overstate.

On a side note, the $200 tax has been the same since 1934, when it was the equivalent of $3,500 in today's money. It was an effective way to make sure that only a certain class could afford NFA items (silencers, short barrel rifles, short barrel shotguns, machine guns, "destructive devices," etc... aka Class 3 items).
