Boden Mill has been a fixture of Chard's town centre since at least the 1820s, hearkening back to the town's ties with the lace industry.
The council intends for most of the building to be converted for residential use - resisting calls from the public in September 2019 to turn it into a hotel.
In the meantime, we were give access to the historic building, and this is what we found.
You may think a building this old, which has been vacant for so long, would be in complete disrepair - but actually, a lot of the structure remains both intact and visually striking.
Evidence of the mill's legacy as part of the age of steam can be seen from the unusually high ceilings on part of the ground floor - built to accommodate the huge engines that would send power via belts to the other four floors.
The roof of the building was designed to be completely fireproof, with a unique and effective design which can be visible from the huge open space on the top floor.
The lace business closed in the 1930s, and the building has seen a variety of uses since then - including a record store, with stickers advertising The Who and The Beatles still being visible on the third floor.
Like many former industrial buildings, such as the Saxonvale complex in Frome, significant traces of the mill's former occupants remain - such as a punching-in clock, rooms set aside for officers, and old-fashioned switches and lighting.
But there's also evidence of more sociable activity - including a skittle alley which takes up a sizeable part of the second floor.

Monks Park is an underground military mine which used to house bombs and ammunition and other military stuff and is rumoured to have been a secret testing centre for submarive electronics. It has a lift shaft and slope shafts and breathers off site. It is privately owned by a company called Leafield engineering who provide storage for the MOD and other companies. Most of the stuff down there is old Army surpus style bits for Army RAF and Navy. There are roads underground you can drive on.

The tunnels, located behind a quarried chalk face in Limekiln Street in Dover, are early 19th century in origin and were reputedly built by Napoleonic prisoners of war using earlier lime workings. They would have been built to provide storage, and were linked to a section of the Oil Mills tunnels to the west. Some of the brickwork is of a very high standard, particularly to the vaulted tunnels set back from the cliff face and to several domes which may have been rooflit originally via oculi
Within the main tunnels, steps lead down to a bricked up entrance to the harbour railway tunnel, beyond which a platform is believed to exist. The access passage was reputedly built during the Second World War to allow casualties to be clandestinely brought in from ships arriving from the continent. It is not known if this ever happened, however the tunnels were used as a public air raid shelter during the war, and reuse was planned in the early 1950s in the event of war with the Soviet Union.
The current name comes from a 1970s fire brigade plan and the origin is unclear (a link with the Department of the Environment has been suggested based on the initials).
