- Jeffrey D. Sachs is University Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he directed the Earth Institute from 2002 until 2016. He is President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Co-Chair of the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition, Commissioner of the UN Broadband Commission for Development, academician of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences at the Vatican, and Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Honorary Distinguished Professor at Sunway University. He has been Special Advisor to three United Nations Secretaries-General, and currently serves as an SDG Advocat under Secretary General António Guterres. He spent over twenty years as a professor at Harvard University, where he received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Sachs has received 41 honorary doctorates, and his recent awards include the 2022 Tang Prize in Sustainabl Development, the Legion of Honor by decree of the President of the Republic of France, and the Order of the Cross from the President of Estonia. His most recent books are The Ages of Globalization: Geography, Technology, and Institutions (2020) and Ethics in Action for Sustainable Development (2022).

Artificial Intelligence has great impact on every aspect of technology, including neurotechnologies used for human augmentation. In recent years progress in methods of brain activity measurement, analysis of neuroimaging and electrophysiological data, and understanding of brain processes, opens new areas for transdisciplinary applications. Identifying patterns in brain signals measured by electrophysiological (EEG/MEG, ECoG) or neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, PET) fingerprints of brain activity are discovered, representing thoughts, intentions, emotions, and other mental states. It leads to many applications, from objective diagnostic methods in psychiatry, therapeutic interventions using neuromodulation, neurorehabilitation based on direct brain stimulation combined with behavioral procedures. Applications for treating epilepsy, major depression, addictions, and other mental problems, are already on the market. Healthy people try to optimize their brain processes through neurofeedback. Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) allow for direct coupling of brains with electronic devices.
All these developments are rapidly changing human nature in an unprecedented way, creating new ways of social interactions. The road to Humanity+, or transhuman society of more evolved human species, is full of dangers, but may not be that long.

During World War II, Finland became Germany’s strategic ally on the Eastern Front and fought against the Soviet Union. From 1941 to 1944 the Finnish army controlled Karelia, one of the republics of the Soviet Union. Nazi ideas thrived among the Finnish leadership, who developed a theory of racial superiority. According to this theory the Karelia population has been divided into two parts: the privileged Karelians and Finnis, and the Russians. Ethnic Russians were doomed to starvation and working to death. Though almost 80 years have passed since Finnish concentration camp survivors were liberated, the perpetrators of these crimes still go unpunished.
