Itapema é uma cidade no estado de Santa Catarina, no Brasil. Localiza-se a uma latitude 27º05'25" sul e a uma longitude 48º36'41" oeste, estando a uma altitude de 2 metros. Sua população é estimada em 2011 era de pouco mais de 48.000 habitantes.
Colonizada inicialmente por indios carijós e posteriormente por europeus (açorianos),a partir de meados do século XVIII, vindos da baía de Porto Belo. Os açorianos que emigraram para o Brasil em meados do século XVIII (entre 1748-1756) têm suas origens nas ilhas Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Graciosa e São Miguel.
Os descendentes desses imigrantes, no início do século XIX, povoaram a região de Itapema, dando, em 30 de dezembro de 1914, a Itapema, sua primeira estrutura administrativa, com a criação de seu Distrito Policial.
