I get many people saying I should be in a band. I was in lots of my own bands from 2006 to 2018. Did all the hiring, auditioned hundreds of singers, got all the gigs, did all the promo, taking to managers, making posters, making videos, audio recordings. So much work for so little return. This gig was around 2012. I always used female singers exclusively. This one was not too bad. She had a good attitude and was willing to sing almost anything. Not the greatest 'vocals' but at least moved around on stage which is more than I can say for most of them. I'm trying to remember why we only gigged with this singer a couple times but it's most likely something I couldn't deal with in the vocalist. It was always problems with singers. Either they took too long to learn songs, had limited ranges, took too many rehearsals to get their shit together, brought personal issues into the band, or they couldn't afford to buy their own mic. It's why I would go instrumental within a year of this show and keep singers only for small duo gigs. Eventually, even duo gigs with singers became too much hassle and prevented me from playing guitar the way I wanted to play. The fact that most singers NEED to sing Adele didn't help. The reason this singer is visibly enthused in this video is that the song is her choice, not mine. I never cared about this song, to be honest. There were many more Zep songs I would rather play, and did play. At the Rusty Gull, we usually got a Friday and Sat night and made $400 per night to split four ways. Add in weeks of rehearsal, 7 hours total travel/play time and you can quickly see you're better off working at McDonald's. This singer, I can't remember her name, eventually went off to do casino work where she quickly realized she would have to play boring top 50 songs or never get work. There is always a trade off. I never, ever fell into that trap with my bands. For me, it was all about set list variety and trying to something different. Also, casinos don't pay that well either. I never wanted to be a corporate style band playing to the lowest common denominator. The Rusty Gull was a nice neighborhood pub in North Van that started up around 1982 and was run by the same guy until he sold it in 2018, absolutely brilliant timing. He saw live music was on the way out and he retired. The new owner did not bother to bring it back. It was renamed 'The Gull' and is now a shadow of its former self, just another boring restaurant with no live music.
