The question of whether or not you should go cabled or wireless boom isn't one you often get to make. That is usually a sound mixer's decision. Sure, a cabled boom will sound better but if going wireless gives the boom operator the freedom to go anywhere on set at any time to tweak something, listen for a sound, etc then it may be the better option. In this video I'll go thru some of the pluses and minuses of going cabled and hardlined.

As a Boom Operator (Microphone Placement Technician) it's your decision as to how it's best to capture the audio in the scene. Sure, if the sound mixer wants something more or his/her style is to capture sound a different way, you'll need to follow those guidelines but as a rule, what should you be putting a mic on? In this video I'll be covering just that!

When I started this YouTube channel I put a lot thought of thought into how it should look, sound, appear graphically, which social media I should use, which email service I should use, etc. What I didn't realize was that my graphics could use some improvement.
In July 2018 a graphics designer out of the Netherlands named Peter Slegers reached out to me and offered to help me redesign my YouTube channel graphics to help them work better for my channel. He went all out and produced multiple pages of samples with descriptive write-ups on why this was important and I was blown away. How could I not take his advice?
In this video I talk a bit about what I'm replacing and show some of the graphics changes I'm making to help my channel look better. Thank you again goes out to Peter for his expert branding advice.

This video began 4 month prior to release and let me start by appologizing for the jitter during the presentation portion of this video. This video took me approx 4 hours to shoot and 18 hours to edit because of a few technical issues I won't bore you with. Long story short... I had the single 33GB video file my whole presentation was shot with corrupt. I had to buy software to restore it as good as it was and reshooting wasn't an option this time. I tried to cover it up with some b-roll but please accept my appology regardless.
This is the third time I've had to redesign my studio but my new studio 3.0 was going to present new challenges. I needed it to be effective, light and able to be relocated with no waste. In this video I go over what I did and why I did it.

As we've already discussed, boom operating is not as simple as just holding the boom over the actor's head. No, quite the contrary... you are one of the few people on set that have to memorize the dialogue. Perhaps memorizing all the lines isn't your technique and you have an alternate approach... In this video we'll go over your options and why it's important to know what is going to be said and when.

Welcome to the twenty ninth episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. In the world of multicamera filmmaking us sound pros are always trying to get the best tracks. Sometimes this means we have to try to get a camera shut down so we can get a boom over and close to talent and when this is the case, how do we do it? That's topic one and for topic two I'll share my thoughts on why I believe sound is over half of the movie watching experience. I hope you enjoy.

We are not perfect beings but we have to play the hand we were dealt. Just as someone born with no arms can learn to drive, you can learn to use your natural voice in the way it was intended. All too often people try putting on a radio style voice or channeling someone they admire but I'm sorry to say, you can't match the real thing. By no means should you give up, just stop trying to copy someone else and be yourself. Channel your own gifts! In this video I'm going to go into depth on this and show you why you should channel yourself in your content - and not just because it would be a loss to lose the original you.
The microphone I'm using is the Rode NT1.

Welcome to the twenty eighth episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. There's a common misconception that we've always used lav mics on talent and we always should. In a perfect world, even today, we shouldn't have to and for our first topic I'll discuss when it might be better not to. Set lighting still incorporates the use of flashing bulb style lighting units and those flashed can, but don't always, cause flashing on camera. When can you run the ballasts in "silent mode"? We'll discuss that. Enjoy.
0:00 Intro
1:01 To Wire or Not To Wire? That is the question.
