It’s been known that Homo sapiens left the continent of Africa around 50,000 to 60,000 years ago, which contributed to our current gene pool. But, could there have been an earlier out of Africa migration by Homo sapiens, our species? Let's look at the latest discovery from Laos, where archaeologists have found 2 fossils in the Tam Pa Ling cave in Northeastern Laos.
Who was the last common ancestor of Neanderthals and us modern humans?
The last common ancestor of both the Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis is now seen as Homo heidelbergensis, but what do we know about this enigmatic species of ancient humans?
The discovery of the very first bone of Homo heidelbergensis happened a little over a century ago near the town of Heidelberg.
The later discovered fossils of Homo heidelbergensis have been found all over Africa and Europe with a small chance that a fossils discovered in Northern India is from a Heidelbergensis species as well.
It seems like approximately 800,000 years ago Homo heidelbergensis emerged for the first time, Homo heidelbergensis populations seem to have travelled through Europe and Africa during this time, although around 300,000 years ago the Sahara became a dry barrier during a severe cold spell, which seemed to have limited the movement of these populations between Africa and Europe.
It’s around this time were we can recognize noticeable regional differences between the Homo heidelbergensis populations of Africa and Europe.

Thousands of years before the ancient people in Europe and Eurasia learned how to farm there were hunter gatherer groups in the subarctic building fortified settlements, these permanent settlements challenge the notion that agriculture was needed for a culture of people, or in other words societies, to settle down in one location.

The debate around the evolution of modern humans has sparked up new arguments after new information has come to light about Homo sapiens fossils found in East Africa.
When looking at the origins of Homo Sapiens, better known as modern humans, we know that the oldest remains on record have been found at Djebel Irhoud in Morocco and date to approximately 315.000 years ago.
I would like to note that the fossils from Morocco that are the oldest that we currently know of, are being contested by anthropologists as they do not believe these fossils to have belonged to Homo sapiens.
But with that said, for a long time it was thought that the oldest remains were found in Ethiopia at the Kibish Omo site, dated to approximately 195.000 years ago.
Well, on January 12th 2022 a new paper was published in Nature with more information and new dates on the Kibish Omo site, this pushes back the timeline considerably, by at least 35,000 years.
So let’s take a quick look into the Omo Kibish site, a geological formation located in South-western Ethiopia, where in 1967 Homo sapiens fossils were found.
Omo 1 refers to the group of fossils that were found by the late Kenyan Palaeoanthropologist Richard Leakey who unfortunately passed away on January second 2022.
These fossils were believed to not be older than 195,000 years, but new research into the geochemical fingerprints of a thick layer of ash found above the sediments containing the fossils showed that these fossils were deposited before the eruption of a volcano approximately 230,000 years ago.
So the way these fossils are dated is through the use of single-crystal isotope dating applied to stratigraphically associated volcanic ash beds, otherwise known as tephra beds.
The volcanic remains were dated by collecting pumice rock samples from the tephra beds and grinding them to sub millimetre size.
Each volcanic eruption has its own fingerprint, an evolutionary story below the surface, that shows the path the magma followed.
Once you’ve crushed the pumice rock you free the minerals within and that makes it able for researchers to date then and identify the chemical signature of the volcanic glass that holds the minerals together.
The tephra beds at the Omo Kibish site have now revealed a date that the volcanic eruption occurred at least 233,000 years ago, which means that the fossils in the sediment underneath the tephra bed date to at least the same age.
But as you can imagine they are older than the volcanic eruption as the fossils were already in or on the ground when the eruption occurred as they are found underneath the tephra beds.

Medical history needs to be rewritten due to this latest discovery from Borneo, Indonesia.
Because who would’ve thought that a surgery as complicated as an amputation could have taken place 31,000 years ago?
The remains of this individual were found in 2020 by a group of Australian and Indonesian Archaeologists, they discovered the skeletal remains deep inside the Liang Tebo cave, which is also known for the human hand art on the walls, in the Eastern Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo in Indonesia.

We went to the vet with 4 cats
We had to go to the vet yesterday with all 4 of our cats.
Mosi our boy needed his yearly vaccinations, Gaia needed a shot against her allergies.
Malou had 2 bumps underneath her armpits, but luckily they were gone & were just simply muscle knots, nothing serious.
Laila had to be weighed & she has gained half a kilo, she now weighs 2,85 kilograms!

In the 1920 ancient hand axes were discovered at this Acheulean site located at Fordwich near Canterbury in Kent England, and these date back to between 560,000 and 620,000 years ago.
But in the new excavations that were carried out in 2020 a lot more tools were discovered, tools like cores, flakes, retouched tools and scrapers but also tools with piercing implements.
We know that Homo heidelbergensis was a hunter gatherer species, they were known to eat a variety of animals and plants and many of these tools could have been used to process these animal remains for food but these tools with piercing implements could have been used for different activities.
The scrapers and these piercing elements could suggest that Homo heidelbergensis at this location were preparing animal hides, probably for the creation of shelters and clothing.
