Comments on the Joker Movie Controversy and the Spectacle
From Cancel Colbert to the Joker Movie, people act as if deciding whether to like a movie is a life or death issue. How and why did we decide that speech and expression had direct material consequences? When did we decide that the world was no longer real but rather a Spectacle?
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.

The Acid Horizon crew are joined by Ray Brassier to discuss the new edition of Marcuse's 5 Lectures, out on Repeater Books as 'Psychoanalysis, Politics, and Utopia', which he wrote the introduction for. We discuss Marcuse's influence on accelerationism, his historical materialist take on Freudian psychoanalysis, and the function of repression and enjoyment in a capitalist landscape where scarcity appears increasingly artificial in light of technological and cybernetic advances in production.

Fredric Jameson is one of the most important Marxist literary critics. We are joined by Anna Kornbluh to discuss his theory of postmodernism and particularly his work on psychoanalysis and Marxism. We analyze Jameson's incredible essay "Pleasure: A Political Issue" which looks at the relationship between psychoanalysis and Marxism.
This conversation gets at the heart of the Marxism-psychoanalysis relationship, what the stakes are, what psychoanalysis offers to Marxist analysis and more. Anna Kornbluh's research and teaching interests center on Victorian literature and Critical Theory, with a special emphasis in formalism, Marxism, psychoanalysis, and theory of the novel. She is the author of The Order of Forms: Realism, Formalism, and Social Space (University of Chicago 2019), Marxist Film Theory and Fight Club (Bloomsbury "Film Theory in Practice” series, 2019), and Realizing Capital: Financial and Psychic Economies in Victorian Form (Fordham UP 2014).

This video answers two questions: "Did the defeats of the socialist movement play a role in the development of cancel culture?" and "Was Karl Marx a free speech absolutist?"
Spoiler: The answer to both questions is an unqualified "yes!"

On Tuesday the 26th we released a video that was eventually titled “Christopher Lasch, Paul Sweezy, and the Great RESET” but it didn’t get many clicks or views. We watched the dashboard of our youtube studio closely as the video failed to perform and then, after an hour or so, the video was removed by Youtube. It had, according to them, “violated community standards on COVID.” That is, it was thought to have disputed the recommendations of the World Health Organization, specifically related to social distancing and social isolation. We appealed this action as the video did not dispute those recommendations. To be clear it is our opinion that masks are necessary. Lockdowns are often necessary. COVID is real and very dangerous. It’s much worse than the flu. However, despite the fact that anyone who watched the video and took in the argument would see that it did not critique the World Health Organization nor attempt to dispute their guidelines, our appeal of the decision to remove the video was rejected.
This video explores how the climate of censorship online relates to Daniel Bell's declaration of the end of ideology and/or Fukuyama's declaration of the End of History. The fact-checking pseudo neutrality of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the rest are symptoms of the acceptance of the end of history. It is symptomatic of the left's move from socialism to statist progressivism.
If you're interested in seeing the video that was taken down last week you can find it in a public post on our Patreon page.

Ben Burgis’ last video was reported for violating community standards, blocked from suggested videos, and put behind a warning screen. We hold that that there was nothing offensive, nothing that violated community standards, in the video. This is Burgis’ response to the incident and his call for the nationalization of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the rest.

Black popular culture has been viewed by some as the creative expression of Black American identity. What does it mean when those who create that popular culture don't belong to the class of Black folks they seem to portray while potentially fulfilling the worst trappings of underclass ideology regarding the Black poor?"
