Amazing Driver's Education in Northfield, Minnesota
Helping people: that's what drives so many entrepreneurs. These brave folks have talents, skills, ideas and most importantly the gumption to get up and address needs in their community. Frankly, the world needs more of this spirit now!
In this Small Scale Life Podcast and Video, I have the honor of interviewing Kris Geissler. Kris saw a need to provide driver’s education in her community, and she started the Northfield Area School of Driving to help teach students how to drive safely.
Who is Kris Geissler? Kris is a single mom and has a background in special education. She went from the St. Peter Security Hospital to teaching. She wanted to help students who were struggling in school in an effort to prevent them from going down a dark path. Kris has a passion to help these students succeed in school and life.
Northfield is a community south of the Twin Cities and home to St. Olaf College, Carleton Collage and Malt-O-Meal. It is far enough from the Twin Cities that it is beautiful bedroom community with small town charm, but it is big enough that there are needs for students and people that go unfulfilled.
One of those needs was driver’s education. There were no driver’s education classes available to local students. Kris saw that need and started her school to address that need in the Northfield area, especially when Community Education said "no."

Happy Wednesday, all!
It is Day 10 of our April 2024 Whole30 Challenge, and Janie and I wanted to check in with you and see how you are doing.
I felt pretty rough over the weekend actually. I had a big headache and my stomach was a bit off, but I am feeling really good today.
One thing I am thinking about is getting some more movement in. I went for a hike at the Willow River State Park this weekend, and I had to go down and up a BIG steep hill. My knees are reminding me that I am a human, but they also remind me that I need to keep moving. Think about adding movement into your Whole30 Challenge. Start small and slow and build from there.
KEEP GOING
I know you are tempted to get on the scale and see what is happening. Resist that urge!
As I said in the video, you might stumble and cheat a bit. It’s ok; keep going!
We are moving right along. Stay focused. Keep going! It does get easier and better!
Remember to learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday. And that, my friends, is a good thing!

Happy New Year!!! Ding dong 2020 is dead! 2021 is finally here!
Now I know that a lot of you are thinking that taking down the 2020 Calendar and pinning up the 2021 Calendar is enough to change everything. Those of us with a few more years and some grey hair know better: the date has changed but the same challenges are ahead.
As we celebrate the New Year, my hope for you is that you become the lighthouse in someone’s life. What does that mean?
We all have a certain set of skills and things we are passionate about. We can pass that on to someone who is struggling right now and give them hope. That is the idea of “being the lighthouse.”
Last night in the Full Moon Drum Wash, I had a vision as the Energy Healer walked around me hitting her elk drum. I could see a white and black lighthouse standing at the mouth of a harbor as the sun went down in a glorious orange and yellow sunset. As I told this to the healer, she was a little confused. She didn’t quite know what to think about it, but I knew what it meant.
“Be the lighthouse” = Show people the way.
Julie and I are embarking on a Grand Journey in 2021. We are building our lives, our home, our garden, our community and our future from scratch. We are showing you a way to a different life, a simple life. We call it:
A Small Scale Life.
Friends and family don’t understand what we are doing and the decisions we are making. They don’t understand us, and they don’t have to. We know our truth and our path forward, and we will show it to you.
We are writing a new story for our family and family tree, and I am REALLY excited about this. We are healing the land and healing ourselves at the same time. It really feels like we are sitting on the nose of a rocket as it is beginning to launch.
As we launch into 2021, think about what you know and how you can give hope to those around you. Be the lighthouse: the people around you need you.
Get ready. 2021 is going to be one crazy ride! At least we can start it with a guy named Tommy Cakes standing in snow with a funny hat on and doing a “social!”

I decided to move beyond my Grounding Challenge and begin a Daily Grounding Practice. I am going to try to post daily. If I miss a day or two, I am human.
PURPOSE: I am going to carve out time each day to slow down and connect with Nature in some way.
Why am I doing this?
❄️To remind myself to be grateful - I am extremely grateful for the people and events unfolding in my life.
❄️To connect with Nature
❄️To practice discipline in good times and more difficult times
❄️To be be mindful - Some live outside in these extreme temperatures. Never forget those less fortunate.

Day 11: Breathe Deeply
It was 8 degrees F outside, and with the wind chill, it was -8 degrees F. It was time to get out there and get some fresh air.
My friend Amy Dingmann had a great A Farmish Kind of Life Podcast Episode yesterday. She made an excellent point that we have never been here before. There are stresses and issues going on that we cannot comprehend. We do not know what others are going through.
We need to have a little grace for them, and we need to have a little grace for us too.
These are Tipping Points in our lives. Out of chaos can comes big changes if we choose. It is up to us to make those changes when opportunities present themselves to us.

Welcome to Getting Grounded with Tom: Good Friday Edition
It is a Good Friday. This week has been a roller coaster of emotions as things moved forward in a BIG way for the Eagles Ridge project. On Wednesday, I sold my 38 acres in Central Wisconsin to my mom. That was my grandma and grandpa’s land, and I have had it since 2009.
It is a gorgeous piece of property, and we have taken good care of it since we took over ownership of it. The red pines were planted in the 1960’s, and they are over 70-feet tall right now. Seeing and walking through those trees my grandpa planted is a beautiful sight.
While it would have been a great bug out location, it didn’t quite fit with what our Eagles Ridge plans. This winter, we worked out a deal with my mom, and we finally closed on Wednesday (3/31/2021).
This deal does a couple things:
1) keeps the land on our family
2) provides the fuel to power the Eagles Ridge rocket into space
This was a big step towards making this project happen, and we are grateful for my grandparents and my mom for being part of the Eagles Ridge story.
Family stuff can be a real pain, but they can be a really big blessing too. You cannot progress a d improve without some sacrifice. And that is a great lesson on this Easter Weekend.

BE ADVISED: Snow and subzero temperatures can hurt you (ie, frostbite). There are MANY ways to ground and get a dose of Nature. The key: get outside. Be careful. Be safe.
