✪ Those of us in the custom karaoke community spend a lot of time making sure that our videos are the best quality and most authentic versions available. We use the original band sources, with all ad revenue and compensation going to them. Our channels are not monetized, and therefore, we do this because of the love we have for the music and artists we feature.
✪ Occasionally, our uploaded videos are blocked in some regions or worldwide. There are certain artists (or specific songs) that we know don't allow their music to be shared, so we avoid them. Despite them making all the revenue from the tracks, not us, we still respect their wishes and boundaries. We help to bring attention to their music, and their permission allows us to provide the most variety and best quality karaoke tracks for the singers and fans of the world.
✪ Again, all of our videos are copyright claimed, but the artist allows them to be publicly available (with all revenue going to them). Occasionally, the visibility will shuffle between regions and may become blocked. While inconvenient to singers, it doesn't hurt the karaoke channel. However, some artists will later force the removal of a video and issue a strike against the channel, despite having received revenue from all views up to that point. This often comes as a surprise and doesn't allow the karaoke creator the opportunity to correct this issue.
✪ Three current strikes on a channel makes it susceptible to deletion, and the appeal process is quite difficult and overly automated. Given the opportunity, if we found that the artist no longer wanted the video to be shared, we would honor their wishes and delete it. If we could speak to the copyright holder and request an appeal, then we would also offer to delete the video. However, the response window is limited and there's only one chance allowed. Oftentimes, there's no easy way to even reach the label or artist.
✪ In the case of Lemmy Caution, we believe Tyler the Creator's crew was issuing copyright strikes to take down some new, leaked content. Lemmy's karaoke videos had all been published at least two years ago and were not part of this issue, so his channel should not have been affected. The copyright holder had been receiving revenue from his videos ever since they were published, before the strike.
✪ To make matters worse, rather than receive one strike for all of the artist's tracks, he received one for each video. This immediately suspended the channel and set it up for deletion. He couldn't access his channel to appeal the strikes from within or confirm the strike details, because he was not part of the YouTube Partners program. Despite being one of the largest karaoke channels and having created more than 3,000 tracks, his inability to be monetized meant he didn't qualify.
✪ Losing Lemmy's channel is a major loss for the worldwide karaoke community, since many at-home singers and bars stream his tracks. He is one of the original creators of custom karaoke, so his brand is forever tied to the scene. Our goal is to bring attention to this situation to help recover his channel but also possibly avoid the same thing happening to others in the future. We appreciate the opportunity to share the music and our productions through Youtube, but if this can happen to Lemmy, it can happen to any of the rest of us.
✪ We hope that we can strengthen our relationships and reputations among artists and labels. We want to be as collaborative and transparent as possible, in a way that helps everyone involved. Any artist or copyright holder is always encouraged to reach out to any of us if there's an issue with our videos, and we will share that with the more than 100 other hobbyists out there doing the same as us.
Thank you for your time and attention with this.
