Dead Head Fred is a horror comedy action-adventure video game for the PlayStation Portable, developed by Vicious Cycle Software and published by D3 Publisher. It features a premise that is a combination of 1940s-style noir and contemporary horror, dubbed "twisted noir" by the design team. The game is a single-player experience whose title character, Fred Neuman, is a private investigator with the ability to switch heads. Fred has recently been murdered and decapitated, and has few memories of the events leading to his death. The plot follows Fred as he pieces together the clues of his murder and tries to get revenge on the man who killed him. Unlike many action game heroes, Fred has no conventional weapons—he relies solely on the powers available to him from the severed heads of fallen enemies. The game received generally positive reviews, with reviewers mentioning its dark humor and noir-inspired motif as high points. It received criticism for its controls and lack of combat depth. In combat, players have several attacks at their disposal, depending on the head Fred is equipped with. These attacks include combos, head-specific counterattacks, and ranged attacks. During a counterattack, the player can complete a Quick Time Event to instantly kill an enemy by removing its head, which gives Fred "Rage" points. Rage energy builds up over time, and the player can use it to unleash powerful attacks on multiple foes. Dealing a large amount of damage to an opponent will stun them, during which time Fred can remove their head. Collected heads can be traded at "Head Shops" for a usable version. There are several types of environmental puzzles that the player has to solve in order to progress through the game. Each one requires a specific head—the Bone head gives Fred sharp claws which allow him to climb on the sides of buildings, while the Shrunken head decreases his size dramatically and lets him navigate platforming levels, such as a saw mill. It was released in Japan on December 5, 2009, in Europe on July 9, 2010, and in North America on November 1, 2010. The player takes control of a Pikachu and travels through many zones, each of which has one or two mini-games called Attractions, where the player will receive a Sky Prism Piece for achieving a bonus score. In each of these games, working together with other Pokémon is required to succeed. Over the course of the game, more and more Pokémon will be befriended, and they will help the player achieve higher scores in Attractions. Several aspects of this game are repeated from previous games. The player acting as a Pokémon was previously used in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, and photography was the central feature of Pokémon Snap. The PokéPark Pad provides access to an important game menu, it is received by Chatot at PokéPark's entrance. It allows the player to view the amount of Berries Pikachu is currently holding, the amount of friends Pikachu has, the remaining Camera film, Pikachu's profile picture (chosen at the file selection screen) and allows access to three menus. The first menu is named "Pikachu's Stats" and provides information about Pikachu's potential HP, Dash, Thunderbolt and Iron Tail stats. A full bar means that the stat is complete and can no longer be updated at the Meeting Place, whilst an empty bar means that Pikachu hasn't acquired the stat yet. The HP and Dash stats are learned by default at the beginning of the game. Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania video game developed and published by Australian studio Team Cherry. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows in February 2017, and later for macOS and Linux in April 2017. The game tells the story of a titular Knight, on a quest to discover the secrets of the long abandoned insect kingdom of Hallownest, whose depths draw in the adventurous and brave with its promise of treasures and answers to ancient mysteries. Hollow Knight's gameplay is primarily focused on exploration, platforming and combat. Players explore a large interconnected world using a variety of movement and combat techniques. In classic Metroidvania style, there are areas of the world that the player cannot access until they obtain particular items or abilities. Maps for each area can be bought from the cartogragher, Cornifer, generally hidden somewhere within the zone. Cornifer leaves small hints that leads to his location such as scattered pieces of paper and a hum that can be heard while in the area. The player can also buy upgrades that place markers on the map or allow them to reveal parts of the map as they explore. Saving the game can only be done on benches to rest on found throughout the world. The game's combat is focused around using the Knight's nail, a weapon that resembles a sword, to strike enemies above, below, or to left and right. The nail can be upgraded to do more damage as the game progresses and can also gain special attacks by focusing energy. Many areas have a 'boss' enemy that the player must defeat in order to continue, and there are a number of sub-bosses that drop useful rewards or upgrades. Defeated enemies drop Geo, a currency that the player can use to buy items from shopkeepers. Striking enemies also earns the player SOUL, a resource that can be used to either heal from damage or unleash special abilities such as long range spells and blasts. If the player is killed, they respawn at the last place they rested/saved, lose all their Geo and the ability to hold the maximum amount of SOUL.
