Ep. 5396 – Matt Agorist on Breonna Taylor and American Police Abuse – 10/15/2020
Scott talks to Matt Agorist about some recent cases of unlawful police killings and police abuse in this country, both the high-profile incidents and the ones that escape mainstream notice. Agorist reminds us of the details of the Breonna Taylor case, in which police officers who were actually looking for Taylor’s ex-boyfriend fatally shot her in the middle of the night while executing a no-knock warrant. The ex-boyfriend, it turns out, had already been arrested by that point. One officer has been charged for recklessly shooting into neighboring apartments, but the rest of the officers have thus far escaped any consequences. Sadly, this is just one case among many, most of which never receive the kind of attention that Breonna Taylor’s case has. Agorist discusses many other such incidents, along with some of the obstacles to reform.
Reza Marashi, Research Director for the National Iranian American Council, discusses the interim implementation deal on Iran’s nuclear program; the need for diplomatic progress to prevent hardliners from taking control of the situation in Iran and the US; and why new sanctions will advance – not stop – Iran’s nuclear program.

Eric Schuler asks Scott for his take on the recent protests in the Gaza strip in which Israel has killed tens of civilians and wounded hundreds of others.
They go over some of the most common right-wing talking points used to defend the Israeli response.
Here are a few of the questions they tackle:
*Is Hamas orchestrating the entire protest march?
*Are all Gazans effectively terrorists because Hamas is in charge of the Gaza Strip?
*What do the Palestinians have to protest about anyway?
And many more!
If you have more questions for Scott, be sure to ask on Twitter or in the YouTube comments section using #SHSQA.

Historian Gar Alperovitz shares the history of America’s use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Contrary to what most of us learned in school, many of the top military officers and intelligence officials were adamant at the time that use of the bombs was unnecessary to get the Japanese to surrender, which they expected to happen as soon as the Soviet Union invaded. The bombs were used instead as a political maneuver to intimidate the Russians, but which of course only led to the disastrous arms race of the cold war.
Gar Alperovitz is a historian, political economist, activist, and writer. He has taught at the University of Maryland, Cambridge University, and Harvard and is the author of Atomic Diplomacy: Hiroshima and Potsdam and The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb. Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald discusses his article “Obama to sign indefinite detention bill into law;” our return to the McCarthy era when indefinite detention was last codified in law; how the Levin/McCain bill just ties up legal loose ends to 10 years of official government policy previously justified by the AUMF; the broadened definition of terrorism, such that the president could target just about anyone; why we shouldn’t mistake Obama’s initial NDAA objections as a defense of liberty (he just doesn’t want Congress infringing on his near-dictatorial powers); why the progressive/liberal Left is not nearly as good on civil liberties now as during the Bush administration; the coalition of activists outside the mainstream who fight to preserve the Bill of Rights; and how the war on terror is increasingly focused on domestic issues, including this gem from Will Grigg.

Blogger Marcy Wheeler discusses her article “FBI Conducts Threat Assessment on Antiwar.Com Journalists for Linking to Publicly Available Document;” the convoluted chain of events that led the FBI to investigate Antiwar.com; how the file ended up in a FOIA request for the “Israeli Movers” sidebar to the 9/11 attacks; the few barriers to intrusive government investigation into the lives and businesses of private US citizens, thanks in part to the PATRIOT Act; and why the FBI viewed Justin Raimondo’s column, book and link to a list of terrorist suspects as possible evidence of spying on behalf of a foreign power.

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) discusses his new book Liberty Defined: 50 Essential Issues That Affect Our Freedom; abandoning the stodgy inside-the-beltway style of campaign management in favor of youtube-style ads put together by his youthful and tech savvy supporters; why increased American pessimism reflects a popular awakening to our deep economic troubles; and why we should be wary of authoritarianism in the guise of “problem solving” politicians.
