Human Sexuality and It's Relationship to Trauma 2

In this follow up to my first video where I raised the issue of human sexuality and its relationship to trauma, here I discuss why the emotional component is so vital to good sexual functioning. In the light of polyvagal theory, we know that neurological (internal) safety is key to being able to function well sexually. Where mobilisation with threat occurs we cannot play, we feel too threatened, where immobilisation with fear occurs we cannot be intimate.
Sexual orientation or expression is along a continuum and many of us grow up with shame around this and it inhibits good relationships until we come to acknowledge our shame as a learned response to overwhelm.

In this short 14 min video I introduce the importance of the book 'On Tyranny' by Timothy Snyder. Why its lessons from the 20th century are important to consider now in the 21st.
Part of a series - 1 recording per chapter to use bite-size quotes from the book to prompt discussion of why this particular period of history is so crucial and what we need to do to create a better future for our children.
Here in the introduction, we look at why democracies can fail and simple solutions from demagogues or compliant governments, applied in the face of increasing inequalities, can introduce terrible tyrannies on their people by subtle means. It is always ordinary people who carry or deny their own oppression, so learning to understand the lessons of the past might help us in resisting what is being waged in our name now.

In this video I talk about the mental health consequences of lockdown and how we can ameliorate with connection and sharing stories of good news.
I cover the crisis in care homes and how for those caring for them seeing so many people die and believing you may have unwittingly infected them is a form of vicarious trauma.
I look at the latest figures show us that a larger number of people have been exposed in the UK (and probably throughout the world) and therefore herd immunity may be closer than we think. the death rate is probably closer to 0.37%* rather than the 3.7 we were told at the beginning as numbers of infected people were underestimated by a factor of 10 at least! T
Finally I deal with the nature of democracy** and finding a voice. Find connection with others as an antidote to trauma.
*in fact later data makes it even lower
**sadly I am sad to see that democracy is being systematically dismantled now by well-meaning politicians trying to police the desperate and ill-informed responses to a pandemic they don't understand fed by misinformation on the nature of viruses and their function.

Tinnitus (ringing in the ear) is a common problem for many people. I discuss the common causes and what you can do about it. I mention vagal stimulation (the vagus nerve innervates the head and neck and is involved in transmitting information from the body to the brain and vice versa). Gargling, singing, chanting tapping all stimulate it. but to see some more ideas check out this video. Other ways include: Cold Stimulus - Cold water/ice cube on face
and Yoga - Cat-Cow/Sun Salutation/Downward Dog, deep breathing, massage, acupuncture, exercise and sunlight.

in this re-recording of an older video on the Spiritual Bypass, a term coined by Dr Miles Neale of the Contemplative Institute, we see that avoiding our unfelt emotions is a result of relational traumas in childhood. These are extremely common and may cause us to be challenged by the need for emotionally connected relationships in adulthood.
Many people seek spiritual solutions to this difficulty but because some spiritual traditions eschew the messy, human side of life with its uncomfortable feelings and complex solutions, and followers are encouraged into a disembodied state of transcendence which just avoids the problem altogether - a form of dissociation which does nothing to heal the damaged inner child within.
