The WWII Camp 16 Mile was a World War II military base located along the Stuart Highway. It now consists of a series of cement foundations that mark various buildings and constructions, Gun pits (round dirt pits), dirt trenches, short fortifications built of local stone, two bottle dumps and latrines built of cement slabs ('Flaming Furies'). After Japanese planes attacked Darwin in a World War II raid on February 19, 1942, resulting in an estimated 235 deaths, surviving Australian and American soldiers were sent to build a stone fortress on a hot, bush ridge and anxiously wait for the enemy to come to them. It is thought more than 1,000 Australian and American soldiers were stationed at the 16 Mile Camp — a defensive position 19 kilometres east-south-east of Darwin — in what is now the suburb of Johnston. The heritage-listed fortress is still intact and a valuable community asset. It was believed the enemy was going to capture the Darwin peninsula from the south, so the 16 Mile Camp's aim was to cut them off at the pass. The soldiers stayed about three months with an order to defend "until the very end". But the enemy never came. The Japanese had already decided they had done enough damage to Darwin and a land attack was unnecessary.
