Consider the following words…the lyrics from the hymn which read: O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, A second Adam to the fight And to the rescue came. The hymn continues: O wisest love! that flesh and blood Which did in Adam fail, Should strive afresh against their foe, Should strive and should prevail. In short, this wonderful hymn is describing a rematch between man and the devil. The first man, Adam, lost the first match in the early rounds, while the Second Adam…a New Man…the Word Made Flesh…strove against the enemy of the human race in a rematch and Christ prevailed. The first head of the human race failed miserably against the foe, but the New Head of a Redeemed Race…the Father of the World to Come…gained victory.
