Noam Chomsky and Fabian Scheidler on the Crisis of Civilization and "The End of the Megamachine“
This conversation between Noam Chomsky and Fabian Scheidler is moderated by Nermeen Shaikh a weekly co-host at Democracy Now! Noam Chomsky is perhaps the most preeminent American leftist dissident alive today. He is also a renowned philosopher and linguist. Fabian Scheidler co-founded the independent newscast Kontext TV and is the author of "The End of the Megamachine" which is coming out in English from Zero Books in September of 2020.
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.

It argues that social media use is often a psychological response to the need for pleasure and comfort that results from the stresses of life under postmodern capitalism, rather than being a driver of new behaviours as newer technologies are often said to be. Both the explosive growth of social media and the corresponding reconfiguration of the web from an information-based platform into an entertainment-based one are far more easily explained in terms of the subjective psychological experience of their users as capitalist subjects seeking ‘depressive hedonia’ the book argues.
Filling the Void also interrogates the role of social media networks, designed for private commercial gain, as part of a de-facto public sphere. Both the decreasing subjective importance of factual media and the ways in which the content of the timeline are quietly manipulated – often using labour in the developing world and secret algorithms – have potentially serious implications for the capacity of social media users to query or challenge the seeming reality offered by the established hegemonic order.

In an article published in August 2021, Professor Adolph Reed warned that: “It’s time to be blunt. The right-wing political alliance anchored by the Republican party and Trumpism coheres around a single concrete objective—taking absolute power in the U.S. as soon and as definitively as possible. And they’re more than ready, even seemingly want, to destroy the social fabric of the country to do so.” In the article, entitled “The Whole Country is the Reichstag”, Reed drew parallels between the constellation of political forces in present-day America and those that shaped the affairs of Germany in the early 1930s. Are such comparisons legitimate? If so, what are the political implications of such an interpretation of our present-day situation? And what are the chances that the left can halt this authoritarian slide?

This is a continuation of our series on rethinking Critical Theory. In this video, we consider Russell Jacoby’s essay “The Declining Rate of Intelligence” in order to think through how capitalism’s development limits our ability to cope and think. This video takes excerpts from “What is Postmodern Conservatism?”, “Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left?”, and Neglected or Misunderstood: Introducing Theodor Adorno.

This video is dedicated to Moishe Postone who passed in 2018.
This New Year’s Eve we’ll rewind in order to examine the temporal character of capitalism. While taking excerpts from Capitalist Realism and Ghosts of My Life, this video is mostly an exploration of Moishe Postone’s “Time, Labor and Social Domination.”

This video is an attempt to tackle the question “Is Life Worth Living?” However, it ends up answering a different question, namely, “What sort of cultural/psychological structures must be either held onto or created if life is going to be meaningful?”
Excerpts from Eugene Thacker’s In The Dust of This Planet and Mark Fisher’s Capitalist Realism are featured. Thacker’s work is perhaps misread, but in what I hope is a creative and constructive way. There is an attempt to turn his pessimism inside out.

CW: discussion of sexual assault and harassment.
Dr. Joshua Moufawad-Paul is one of the key figures in philosophy involved in the Maoist revival in theory today. With six books already to his name, this interview offers a retrospective on his publications, focused on his critically acclaimed 2016 book ‘Continuity and Rupture: Philosophy in the Maoist Terrain.’ In this interview, Josh discusses with Kenneth his political and intellectual trajectory as it led him from anarchism to autonomism to Maoism, as well as the issues latent in both Trotskyism and contemporary anti-capitalist organising writ large, including the spree of sexual harassment cases internally disguised by major communist organisations and the first-world left’s frequent eurocentrism.

Jason Read joins Acid Horizon to discuss his recently released title, 'The Production of Subjectivity: Marx and Philosophy'. The discussion centers around Marx's notion of 'so-called primitive accumulation' or 'original accumulation'. Using Althusser, Deleuze and Guattari, and Balibar, Jason takes up the idea of the 'multiple logics' which inhabit Marx's work from his discussion of the commodity, the notion of exploitation, and so-called primitive accumulation. Moreover, the discussion covers the concept of 'immanent causality' as the idea which can explain the broader complexity and multiple contradictions of capitalism.
